There's some great work on this year's list... it's the strongest bunch of recommendations I've seen for quite some time.

Lots of RCMBers on there. I'm really pleased to see Mark Patrick Lynch's 'The Music Box' on there; I've read the story four times and each time I'm reaching for a tissue at the end. Wonderful story.

As I'm a new member here, I now GIVE a free copy of the ZENCORE! book anthology to anyone who is currently a member of this forum *and* a BFS voting member with a UK address. How can you vote if you haven't read all the candidates? ;-)
Just write to me at bfitzworth@yahoo.co.uk --
A book sent to you post-free. A book that has been independently described, among othe things, as 'staggeringly important'.

Doh. Tony told me I was up for an award, and I thought it was REAR OF THE YEAR (not to be confused with ARSEHOLE OF THE YEAR). Nice to make the longlist. That'll more than do for me. Best of luck everyone. I'm not a BFA member, so I'm afraid I can't vote for you.

And thanks you to Barbara and Christopher for publishing my piece.

Congratulations all around. Stunned to see I've a story on the long, long list.

How does the process work? Does a piece have to accrue a certain number of nominations to make the list?

If there are any BFS members with voting rights who have not read:
'The Music Box' by Mark Patrick Lynch
'Mr Poo-Poo' by Reggie Oliver
'The Swing' by Don Tumasonis
'The Palace' by Barbara Roden
and would like to do so, please contact me at
ashtree@ash-tree.bc.ca, and I'll do what I can to make a reading copy of each story available.

That's great, Des; but we're talking $45.00 books and air mail postage ($29.00 for a single book), since most of the RCMBers are in England. And while we'd love to be able to do that gratis, we simply can't.

If anyone contacts me at Gray Friar, I'll send either Paul Finch or Conrad Williams or Gary McMahon to you directly. Just lay in enough curry and beer, and they'll be fine in the corner watching the telly.

Will they talk as if they are at a convvention. Silly pub talk and all that? We can all pretend we'll soon off to a reading or a talk or something. Maybe a visit to a virtual dealer's room. Please say yes.

Why not make the nominated short stories on the web until the end of the voting period? That's common practice for the Hugo nominations.

When it's a whole book that's been nominated, one needs the whole feel and timbre of the book itself, I find, to judge it properly.

Des: I thought you were just joking, but wanted to pint out the economics involved in us sending books out to people.

Tom: We're working on making the four stories available online; we should have something in place within the hour. Don't think we can do much about Reggie's collection or the antho, though.

Yes of course I understand about not putting full books online, I was referring to separate short stories only.

Oh - sorry, Barbara. You were offering specific stories up above somewhere and that's fine, I would say, to be read independently on the internet.
I'll get my coat... ;-)

There is an awards showcase in London (19th July) I think. I can't afford the travel costs and to stay over. With the rising cost of food and petrol etc it is becoming harder for everyone. Does anyone see any sense in suggesting a northern showcase too next year - perhaps in June, so that people who can't get to London could have the opportunity to read from their work etc. Perhaps at the York or Sheffield specialist breweries.

Hello, Des, we bump into each other everywhere these days it seems!

Take the free Zencore, folks; it's a wonderful anthology, despite my presense in there . And as I've never been so much as nominated for pencil monitor, I have to milk anyone else's success I can.

Good luck with the voting, Des...

Hi Ramsey - I tentatively asked if Lee would be organizing a night out as he did mention it at Alt.Fiction in Derby. He is contacting the York Brewery for a date and hopes to be getting back to the thread on open nights soon on the BFS board. Can't you tell I'm desperate to get out of the house :>)As soon as I see a date I'll post it here.
