Delighted to announce the result of several years' work on carers. This morning the government announced a new deal for people who provide care for someone, and our work at the University of Leeds had a direct impact on the Department of Health's plans. My boss was at number 10 today for the launch of the new National Carers Strategy. Although we were hoping for a review of the benefits system for carers, there's funds for further respite care, young carers and - our particular contribution - support for carers who wish to remain in/return to employment. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6381207.stm Onwards and upwards! |

Well done to you, your boss and everyone involved! Such a responsibility to look after people - good to hear that some carers can retain some sort of independance. |

Now how about changeing the Governments stance on "second chance" degrees? |

That one's hitting my girlfriend at the moment, potentially, Griff. Pain, innit? Gary, fine work. It must be satisfying to be involved in such work. |

What subject is she doing or going to do, Mark? I can get a loan but the course fees are doubling. |

Kudos to you and your collegues, Gary. keep up the good (and vital) work. Griff - I'm sure this gov't are trying to return us to the days when further education was only for the rich and pampered. |

They're "priorotising" the money for new Universitites. Look around you, are there "graduate" jobs for 50% of school leavers where you live? They don't seem to realise that many degrees don't lead anywhere. With some degrees you can't even use them to go into teaching. |

That's a lot of the problem with degrees - some of them are as much use as the paper they're written on. i studied towards the job I wanted. Some people I know did a degree for the sake of it and ended up working on the bins, pulling pints, painting and decorating... |

Me, too. I wanted to do a course called Interdisciplinary Human Studies at Bradford, which was a combination of English Lit, Philosophy, Psychology and History...but then realised that I like eating. |

The radio seems not to have played this up - they seem eager to jump on the govt otherwise. 'Griff - I'm sure this gov't are trying to return us to the days when further education was only for the rich and pampered.' - I dunno - there's allsorts of courses out there you know. They're desperate. And really I have no problem with the student loan thing - how can the government let so many people study for free? How could they afford to pay the lecturers? |

Ta, everyone. Mark, you're right. I'm pretty proud of this work, especially after interviewing folk who I know will benefit. There's some pretty desperate situations out there. I just hoped this development impacts where it's needed. |

>>I can get a loan but the course fees are doubling. Sounds familiar. Michelle did an English-History degree some years ago and ahs been doing various courses since. Now she's found out the funding's likely to be thrown out the window. A real pity, because she's one of the people who'd really beenfit from a different course degree. I'd qualify still for funding, I think. But I'm too thick to manage such a thing. >>I should be in care. Ah, but do you care? |

The only degrees worth doing if you don't want to live in a bed-sit are: Veterinary Science Medicine Dentistry Pharmacy Opthamology Engineering (various) Chemical Engineering That's not to say that other degrees are worthless, far from it. It's just there will be 'consequences' for you if you choose certain degrees. |
