So I was thinking, because I’m sad and obviously have too much time on my hands, what alternative titles could Ramsey have used for his books? He’s had the different title of THE PARASITE for TO WAKE THE DEAD and in the afterword to OBSESSION talks about wishing he’d called that book FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. I was wondering, in some slightly different universe, what other names he might’ve chosen for his books, were he a slightly different writer or something.

How about

DREAM AND WE’LL BECOME YOU for INCARNATE

THE DEVIL'S HORN for SCARED STIFF (though perhaps only if Ramsey were more Wheatleyish).

THE WORDS TO FEAR for SECRET STORY

THE WINTER THAT SNOWED FOREVER for MIDNIGHT SUN

Sure there must be plenty of others, and better ones than the above.

Good idea for a thread, Mark! The original working title for The Nameless was apparently Home to Mother.

And, of course, The Grin of the Dark started life as The Communications.

I think THE GRIN OF THE DARK might well have been called SILENT LAUGHTER if Ramsey hadn't already wrtitten SILENT CHILDREN. And, of course, the jokes about 'quiet horror' would have been a bit annoying.

SCARED STIFF was originally called RAISING THE DEAD. ;-)

Apparently the original title for PSYCHO was ZANY, but it was considered not scary enough.

Funny, but for a while the title Psycho really used to scare me. And Jaws, even though initially it sounded slightly daft.

This reminds me of the Korean horror film The Wig, which also went by the title Scary Hair.

I quite like the direct translation of the French title for Jaws - THE TEETH OF THE SEA!

Grin = FATTY KERFUFFLE

I quite liked the ad 'Pepsi - For a New Generation' which when translated into Japanese and then back came out as 'Pepsi Bring Your Ancestor Back From Dead'

I believe the Mexican title for The Sound of Music was the Story of Maria, Rebel Novice Nun.

Now that's a title that would have caught my attention.
