Does anyone know why Leisure Books publications are virtually out of stock even before distribution, whereas usually they had been available even for years?
I haven't been able to secure the last titles despite ordering them a few days after the asserted publication date and they are stated as "out of stock" on their website too.
Not every title is good but some are excellent indeed.
Is something changing over there?

In a word, 'yes'.

My understanding is that Leisure, as you knew them, no longer exist.

Don D'Auria has gone and several lines (including horror) will no longer be available in printed form.

I have no more details than that at present. Maybe someone else can fill in the blanks?

That is really a pity.
I was only interested in a few of their titles - one of the early ones was a collection of Tim Lebbon novellas, for example, but it was good to see "midlist" genre writers available in such an affordable mass-market version: easily accessible for anyone.

I think there is some detailed info on the Leisure collapse over at Brian Keene's website.

I couldn't say it better than Tom:

"That is really a pity .. but it was good to see "midlist" genre writers available in such an affordable mass-market version: easily accessible for anyone."

It's a real shame. From Paul's post, does that mean they're going down the ebook route instead of printed books? If so, I guess that's something, but not for me I'm afraid.

A combination of ebooks and POD, I think, the POD being the part that really changes things.

Them moving from mass market paperback publishing to POD reminds me of the way comics moved from the newsstands to the direct market. More sensible in some ways, maybe, less wasteful, but inevitably leading to lower sales and lower visibility.

Ouch. That's a blow to the dark fiction publishing world.

And, while I like the concept of well-managed, well-edited POD, the resulting books are always more expensive than Leisure's mass market paperbacks. The affordability of these niche genre publications made them so endearing, garish embossed cover images and all.

Very sad that they've had to go the e-book and POD way. They had an energy about them, gusto...

It is a shame, they were - I thought - a good steady market and they had my novel in the system. The gits.

Yes, Leisure are soon starting their e-book market. I've read from their site each e-book will be followed by the trade edition after months. As far as I have seen on their forthcoming schedule, it will be almost all reprints. Ramsey's "Thieving Fear" should be released as an e-book on July 2011, later possibly to be followed by trade.
