Chuffed to say that I will be the next editor of THE PAN BOOK OF HORROR STORIES. All the details are still to be sorted out, so all you bloggers if you can refrain from posting the news until the press release that would be grand. This is a serious boost to the genre, thanks for all of your support so far and I'll be hoping that a few stories will be winging my way from some of you when I open up the slush pile.

Wow, Johnny, that's wonderful news! You're the new Herbert van Thal, eh? I can't believe how much effort and energy you've put into getting all this off the ground. I take my hat off to you, I really do.

So how is this going to work, Johnny?

Will it the 'The 31st Pan Book Of Horror Stories' or 'The 1st New Pan Book Of Horror Stories'... if you get my drift. And will it be a mixture of old favourite authors and new authors? And will you go for the extreme ordeal horror side of the market, or mix that with subtler supernatural chills?

Sorry for all the questions but you realise you hold in your hands the entire future of popular horror fiction - with the possibility of cornering the nostalgia and the contemporary market in one fell swoop - and it will need done right.

I submitted a very lengthy proposal with how I saw the Pan Horrors evolving for a new readership, but also being very aware that I have to respect the legacy and the readers who made the books what they were.

Good man! I respect you as a true fan, Johnny, and just the type of committed horror nut with talent and the right connections to get this off the ground and make sure it is done right. The reason your reprint of Pan Horror 1 seems to be selling so well is the nostalgia market (people like me). If you can extend that to the book reading youth of today - who can be lured into exploring the heritage of horror - I can see this not only cleaning up but going on to rejuvenate the horror market as a whole. You have my whole and heartfelt support!

Cheers. I really hope it does well - and if there's the budget I'm hoping there is also going to be a Pan Horror book for children.

...also going to be a Pan Horror book for children.

Uhm,first person to approach in that case then would be Alan Temperley,as he's now a children's author.

A sequel to his Kowolongo Plaything would go down well with today's seen-it-all kiddies.

Martin Waddell (who turns 70 next year) is also a children's author now. Best known for Farmer Duck, a Trotskyist take on Animal Farm for young readers in which the animals, having taken over the farm, form a workers' collective to ensure all problems are resolved democratically. Great stuff.

Martin Waddell wrote a book called Farmer Duck. That's a missed pun for Joel, then.

Alexicon... Kowlongo Playground? :D

Martin has been very ill this year and I know he doesn't write horror stories any more, but would love to get him to write a kids one. Am a massive fan of his Little Dracula books and it would be really rather brilliant to get him to write a new tale; his last one was in 2001.

His surreal black comedy tales were one of the regular highlights of the Pans in the 60s. I think 'Man Skin' is my favourite. Good to hear he's still around.

Wow - my kids have Farmer Duck. I always assumed it was a different writer.
