A major actor, a great actor, and truly a terrible loss to cinema and theatre. One of the few actors who everybody seemed to admire. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20110103/ten-actor-pete-postlethwaite-dies-aged64-8a3 eada.html |

Oh no. No. Please god, no. Fuck. An actor I've always admired, one of my favourites. When you saw his name on the credits of a film, you knew it would be at least worth a look. Dreadful, dreadful news. |

Horrible news. That face, that voice -- whenever he was on screen, it was hard to notice anything else. |

I didn't even know he was ill. What a sad loss. |

I heard about it this morning and was greeatly saddened. A great actor taken far too early - he had so many performances left in him. That face, that voice -- whenever he was on screen, it was hard to notice anything else. I couldn't have put it better myself, DOG. |

Yes, a great one. Most memorable to me in THE USUAL SUSPECTS, but a guy who did it all. I sure hope there are others coming in behind, to fill the ranks of these exiting masters.... |

He was an actor who turned in great performances whatever the script. You could overlook a film's faults when he was in it because he simply mesmerized you with his authenticity. |

I was astounded by his performance in Distant Voices, Still Lives. Was actually quite saddened by this news. |

Yes, James, me too. Usually it's hard to feel anything about famous actors because of the terrible things which happen daily, but sometimes actors with such integrity and talent when they go, make us sad despite the realities of life. Again, truly a great loss. His performance alongside Daniel Day Lewis In The Name Of The Father was as equally as powerful. Lewis himself has said in the past that he learned more about acting with him than any other actor. He said he had a 'quiet but colossal aura' which made you sit up and take stock of what you yourself were putting into a role. Not just an actor the public loved, but an actor's actor also. |

Very true, Frank. I was lucky enough to see him as Prospero in the Royal Exhange Theatre's production of 'The Tempest' a few years back. Great stuff. |

This is a sad loss indeed – Pete Postlethwaite had so much more to give. As well as a compelling, serious actor, he was a committed political activist who sought out projects he believed in. |

Simon - you lucky sod. The man really did have the ability to range effortlessly between roles, though I'm sure he would have been much too modest to have admitted so. Only last week I watched The Usual Suspects with Ewa who had never seen it. And funnily enough she picked him out, and said, oh, he's great, I've seen him in lots of good roles. He's quite a respected actor in Polish film fan circles as they have a close affinity to respectable British movies, and so he's well known and well-liked. His death was reported on quite a few national Polish newspaper internet portals. Respect indeed. |

Was only watching 'The Shipping News' on Christmas Day. It's a superb film with many fine performances but Postlethwaite stole nearly every scene he was in. I think that DVD may be coming out of its case again soon, along with the videos of 'In The Name Of The Father' and 'The Usual Suspects.' (Though, in parenthesis, has anyone ever worked out what his accent in 'The Usual Suspects' is supposed to be..?) |

Yes, I've always wondered that. But I don't want to find out, I kind of like the mystery behind it. I read a fraction of an interview with Bryan Singer and he said something about asking him to do the accent because of the association with his name...and that's where I stopped reading. I really didn't want to know what it meant. |

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20110103/ten-postlethwaite-a-life-on-stage-and-sc-8a3 eada.html Says a lot about the man. I'm especially admire his political viewpoints and contributions. Brassed Off - I'd forgotten what a decent little movie that was. |
