The once-perceived future, as it has now turned out to be, is (as I view it from the present) very bizarre, quite beyond the visionary powers (as I recall them) of any of my past selves. Those past selves themselves, also, have turned out, in retrospect, to be quite beyond the empathising powers of my current self or, indeed, of my future selves (as I currently visualise these future selves likely to be in the ever-re-newing future ahead).

"Er, you watching the match on Wednesday, Des? In the pub?"

Coffee/screen interface moment!

I read that and my mind supplied the suddenly deepened voice of GaryFry. Replete with manly frown and playful/ concerned punch to the shoulder.

Griff, the man who always sips his hot beverage in advance of reading each post, despite innumerable mishaps involving said substance and the electrical equipment on which these messages are posted. Does he never learn? Alas, not. Something in the way. A knot of synapses, hard-wired to resist computation of external, inputted phenomena, particularly that concerning the involuntary application of warmed liquids mixed with granules upon the kind of screen which invariably comes along as part of a package when one visits a high street and says to the willing sales assistant with his happy frown, "Please, hie thee to thy store room and furnish me instanter with a singular and decidedly adroit model of latter-day computation. Tarry, sir, I have evaporated lumps of Brazilian extract to spurt forth, and not a solitary moment to lose." Returns. Boots up. Brews up, come to that. Fetches brimming mug to machine. Summons Campbell from the depths. Takes a fancy to a thread. And...reads.

Gary, that was very funny.

Alas the coffee cup by my side was half empty and cold, and I'd not drank any for five minutes.

Actually you know, Ramsey himself is a bit blofeld now you mention it. Anyone know if he has a white pussy?

And Des - explain what you're trying to say, where it came from.

I'm afraid it came straight from the refinery of my head.

I wanted to edge towards a concept of one's 'self' as a series of selves (Proust did something along these lines in 'Remembrance of Things Past') - each self an autonomous entity with its own perspectives throughout time and perspectives of each other's perspectives of each other's Selves ad infinitum, ad absurdum - a bit like Elves scampering mischievously about the winding labyrinths of one's life, mind, destiny...

Actually, having slept on this, I take exception to this kind of pompous, patronising comment. I was just joking with you above, and again you turn it into a debate about your education. In fact you turn every debate into that. Tiresome. Adolescent.

Des - I just had an idea to write my life story as a series of short stories with bits of fiction interwoven. In each story yes, I might possibly be a different character.
You watch Rechenbach Falls last night, the thing about Ian Rankin? Not that well done but interesting.

Great idea. Have you read any Proust or Pessoa, both of whom tried something similar. And, of course, my own work.... :-)

I think the problem is that we do imagine these "selves" inside our head, secretly pulling levers and doing mischevious things and even existing at all: we crystallize imaginations of our past selves, when we should be neutralizing them.

A story of a man who induces a lucid comia, and goes into his subconscious to serially kill off all the evil self/elves that have been running around loose, when he realizes... one of them is coming after him....

Des - or that one of them is a better "him" than "he" is!

And he must save him... from another him, that wants to rule the big Him when the "innoculation" is completed....

But he's aided by a her who is a fictive image of her whom big-He is in love with - who doesn't love Him but the him whom He is capable of being, which is small-he whom other-small-he wants to save so big-He can love big-Her --

Eh, it's too complicated. More fun to just antagonize Tony.

Tony, you dunderhead!

I wrote a novella about that very issue: it's in Poe's Progeny, if you're interested. About how modernity - with its global communication networks, etc - fragments the self, and what holds it together.

All of these ideas, of course - in this kind of context - swirl in and around two recent, pretty good movies each: ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, and IDENTITY. Drama (dramedy?) and horror, respectively.

But a wacky comedy of same, could be dizzingly fun....
