After following this for weeks I'm at a loss for words. If I was there I would be walking towards Tahrir Square in Cairo.

I think the saddest thing I've seen is the protester who broke down and walked out of a television interview. He'd been arrested then released and just learned that 300 had died.

I've been following this since it began and from what I can make out there have been some deaths (anything from twenty-plus to seventy-plus, according to different reports) and many injuries due to the skirmishes. I wouldn't be surprised to see the toll rise dramatically if the violence escalates, but I haven't heard from any source that three hundred have died. Where was this reported, Ally?

I saw it on one of the major news programmes but can't remember which. I watch quite a few including Euro news. I'll try and find out, Huw.

Thanks, Ally. I haven't heard anywhere near that number so far, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's eventually a lot higher, if things continue to escalate.

Found something...

'According to UN estimates, more than 300 people have died since the unrest broke out on January 25, with close to 4,000 injured.'

Many will take to the streets today and perhaps march on the nearest palace to Tahrir Square. It then remains to be seen what the army will do.

Well, he's finally stepped down. It will be interesting to see how things develop for Egypt from here on.

I had this image of him in September saying 'not this September, next September...'

At last one of the miserable bastards has walked. These vicious old sods seem to be able to hold onto power for ever and all of them manage to live until they’re almost 200 years old, or long enough to hand over the reins of power to their equally miserable and often more vicious spawn. Won’t Mugabe ever die? Are those mean old Burmese Generals immortal? Can’t anyone id the Italians of that idiot gangster and dangerous clown Berlusconi?

The sad thing is that Egypt is now in the hands of a bunch of sour-faced, democracy-hating generals. Let’s hope they get bored quickly and allow some democracy in. What concerns me is how this will affect Egypt’s relationship with Israel. They are one of the few, perhaps only, Middle Eastern nations to sign a treaty with them and attempt some sort of peace. The last thing we need in Egypt is a power vacuum or a bunch of anti-Semite, West hating fundamentalists to grab the throne. I don’t blame them for not liking us very much, we did stumble all over the world in our imperialist hobnails boots for a handful of centuries but we mean well now and we need some semblance of peace and reconciliation.
Cheers
Terry
