Holy shit...it was breathtaking. Pure escapist entertainment.

The last 4 episodes have been wonderful.

Davros was good. However, the rest was like a provincial panto in January. The SFX of the Tardis was good though. Inside of the Shadow Poclamation looked like a mens toilet.

You know, I just don't think you get it, Griff. It's not about SFX or pyrotecnhics; Who has shown more heart over the last few episodes than the last 100 Hollywood blockbusters I've seen.

And I feel very sorry for you, too, Griff. I began watching Doctor Who at the very beginning, have watched it on and off over the years, and am now re-living the experience with an enthusiastic 10-year-old. As far as I can tell from your comments over past weeks, you see very few redeeming features in the current series. I honestly don't know what you expect. Maybe if you stopped watching it you'd be more content with yourself.

SPOILER

Is Dr Who being regenerated by a new body - with the use of a new actor? And if so, is this a complete surprise with the adverts for the Christmas special being simply a decoy?

I know! If that's the case it's fantastic - the best kept secret on telly ever.
And yet... a little bit of a warning would have been nice. It would have been nice to know we weren't seeing Tennant again, and been able to brace ourselves for it.

And really - to mention effects for a moment - this has been one of the most beautiful sci fi telly/film things there's ever been.

>t o mention effects for a moment

The Tardis travelling to the stolen Earth was a wodnerful throwback to the 70s. I loved it. Shadow Proclamation was a disappointment, though it was good to see the Judoon again, because such things are best left mysterious and unknown, like the Shadows in Babylon 5 were for so long.

I really enjoyed it. The pre-credits (I think) shot of where someone looks up and first sees all those planets in the sky blew me away (partly because the buildup was so well done). I also liked the nods to old Who (the comment about 'having tried to move the earth before' presumably referencing The Daleks Master Plan from 1966), and that we got to Davros' hand before we got to see the rest of him.

Can't wait for next week.

As much as I expect Griff will bite the hand that pats his head...I too have reservations about this series and last night's episode.

This is what I liked; -

Some witty lines...'we know who you are!' & the 'Vision is NOT impaired!' from the daleks... Bernard Cribbins.

Davros was well voiced by the new actor...better than Terry Molloy's hamfisted 80's ranting.

Nutty dalek whatsisname was funny & sad in his quite, quite, maaaad world.

The negatives: the plot was impenetrable...Too many assistants shoehorned in for no real reason than to line 'em up for the fanboys to come over...oh and the Star Trek curse....TECHNOBABBLE! (Spouted while typing on a keyboard very quickly).

I do think this series has been weak compared to the earlier ones. Not the end of the world. Still fun. But...Change is needed IMHO.

Oh, and though Griff is a Pisstaking Welsher, his opinion, as everyone's is relevant and simply saying 'Well you don't have to watch it' is a bit nippy dontcha think?

To worship something without accepting critisism is a bit ....silly really,

'Who just needs a rest and a new think about it.Hey opinions are like arseholes yeah...?

SPOILER WATCH OUT!

(Is it a REAL regeneration? it would be a real cop-out if not)

I've disliked a great deal of this series, but last night's effort was thoroughly enjoyable. Davros looked just right and was perfectly voiced, and the mad, gibbering dalek (who seems to be a bit like those hybrids in Battlestar Galactica) was quite cute in its own mental fashion.

SPOILER TIME!
It has to be a real regeneration - having him regenerate into the same actor would be very bad form indeed! Credit to them for managing to keep it a secret for so long (and for the genuine piece of misinformation with the trailers for the specials...)

I thought this current series of Who was weak until that episode in the library; since then, it's been as good as it gets. And I'm not a Dr Who anorak - I stopped watching after Tom Baker left. :-o

My only criticism of last night's Who is that, with bringing in all the spin offs like that, they've shown the huge fault that Sarah Jane, aging housewife, has a better computer than Torchwood and Unit put together. Where the F*** did she get it from? At least she didn't use her sonic lipstick...

With the minute or so dicrepancy in time that was mentioned in that universe it is quite possible that Who might be able to help himself i.e. Tennant pop up to help the new Doctor. It'd be great if Eccy could drop by, too, or McGann.

I've just seen this thing on Youtube suggesting there are two Doctors this week as a result of a botched regeneration. And - and I've anticipated this myself - the Time Lords return.
Really; the return of those guys is the only way I can see things sorted.

I think Tennant will stay the same, but have bigger lips. And he'll fix them with his sonic screwdriver.

Maybe he'll just have a beard...

And did I hear the drums? Donna seemed to hear somekind of beating noise. Is THE MASTER on his way? Is he really behind this?

This has got Danzinger written ALL over it.

First off, Doctor Who isn't strictly a kid's programme - it's for all ages (otherwise, why would any of us here be watching it?).

Secondly, I just read Christopher's post above and I don't think he said anything 'buffoonish' about Doctor Who. What did he say that you found buffoonish, Griff?

That's your opinion I disagree, Huw.

This is supposed to be a lighthearted board where we come to enjoy and have fun - not get heavy.

As for the prog it's simply filler on a Saturday night. Sometimes it's good sometimes it's not. Some will like it some won't. It's not that important. I'm working for a local authority dealing with family protection work, believe me it's not important.

This discussion now has the overtones of nerdyness and geekyness that sometimes taints SciFi discussion. That's sad, life's too short.

The themes in Who are pretty big to me; they make a big board I can pin my life to, to see where my values lie. Art does that, it really does. I pass on the morals and strive to match the bravery of a guy like Who (yes, he's fiction, but in my mind he's as real as you and I) and they rub off on my family, and the show makes us wonder at humanity and the universe. It feels small but I think it occupies our souls, art, if it's good, and I think Who is more art than a pile of Tate moderns. I've seen my youngest son behave selflessly with his peers at school (defending victims of bullies, giving away footy cards he's just bought - unopened! -to kids who can't afford them) and am convinced it's because he has Who as a role model (he worships the show). Art is a glue that can hold people together.
Honest - I do think that.
Hope we can all make up...

Library episodes - excellent.
Midnight - excellent.
One with Donna changing the future - mostly excellent.
One this weekend - an awful mish-mash, with stuff just being thrown in for the entire fifty minutes.
One line only "no, your future loss" was effective, and Davros seemed fine, but no, one of the worst episodes yet, even worse than that bloody Titanic one (which the good Lord P. loved as well, I believe).
Too many characters - all the 'companions', Torchwood, Sarah Jane Smith, millions of daleks. Midnight, with no visible monster, was a thousand times more effective than a zillion of everything on the screen at once.
I shall watch the last ep if only to prepare to shout a big loud "oh fuck off" when it gets even sillier, which it's bound to.

I guess it depends - I'm sure that the episodes I dislike are maybe more true to the spirit of Doctor Who than the ones I like. When I think of things like THE GIRL IN THE FIREPLACE and BLINK, it's not the usual Doctor Who-ery that I love about them; they seem to really get inside my head in a way that the daft over-the-top ones don't. Maybe if they were all like this most recent one I'd be more inclined to like it, but it just seems somehow more shallow in comparison.

I didn't like the Titanic one. But I thought it was a million times better than the one with peter Kay. that was the single worst 45 minutes of TV I've ever sat through. The monster was designed by a 10 year old in a Blue Peter competition and it felt like the script had been written by a 5 year old in a teletubbies competition, but had then been dumbed down a bit. I fucking hated it with every ounce of my being. It still makes me angry just thinking about it. I can never get that 45 minutes back again...

Ignoring that obviously false opinion as no one with more than 3 brain cells could enjoy that episode, here's a theory.

The director made a point of showing the doctors severed hand in the jar on the floor of the tardis. Perhaps as the Doc regenerates, so will the hand...

OK

Saying that Peter kay was a bit shit is like saying that the second world war was a free and frank exchange of ideas between Germany and most of the rest of the world,, not including Italy (sort of) and Japan. In other words, it's a huge understatement to claim that Peter kay is a BIT shit.

Or to put it another way. Peter Kay is a huge stinky turd in (almost) human form. Everything he touches is SHIT!!!!!!!

I disagree. Phoenix Nights is perhaps one of the best comedies of the past 10 years. Beautifully observed, every episode a joy. I think Kay got a bit lazy with his stand-up but his early stuff is certainly worth checking out.

My delusions are taking me somewhere not unlike Texas. A desert that once looked civilised.

If I absorb any more of my past lives I will cease to be.

But then all those souls just end up in the black hole of my reason.

My favourite sitcoms of all time are Flowery Twats (as it once appeared I the opening credits) and Blackadder. My pick of the current home grown crop would be Peep show, Lead Balloon and saxondale. My favourite American sitcom at the moment is My Name is Earl. In recent years I’ve loved Alan partridge, League of Gentlemen (if that counts) and I especially loved coupling seasons 1-3. When geoff left that went downhill, the balance of the show was spoilt after that. I loved extras but thought the Office was overrated General comedy shows I love QI, Have I got news for you and Never mind the Buzzcocks.

Peter Kay is more pants than a giant pair of pants with extra pants grafted into them.

Yeah, we're pretty much on the same wavelength comedy wise. I adore Saxondale. Think that it's one of the best written comedies of recent years. Peep Show is getting a little too dark for its own good. My Name is Earl Season 1 is fantastic, haven't caught much of the 2nd season. Was disappointed recently to find out that most of the caster and the series writers are scientologists. Makes me feel a bit guilty for liking it.
Coupling 1-3 was very good but I agree that Series 4 lost its balance and heart somewhat.
My favourite things recently have been Flight of The Concords and Gavin and Stacey.

Bit like the Incredible String Band really. Except they were only good before they became Scientologists. But they retrospectively altered their own past work – not in the studio, I mean actually in the past. Because the thetan knows no temporal boundaries.

the Big bang Theory is another fairly good Anmerican sitcom. it's not a classic but given a choice between that and My Family... no contest.

The only person you should feel sorry for Matthew is yourself for writing buffoonish comments about what is in effect a children's TV prog.

To get that obssessive is a little sad and anal lol!

I'm replying for Christopher (aka Matthew Fell), currently in hospital in Kamloops following a mild heart attack on Sunday morning. He stands by his earlier comments, which amounted to nothing more than 'If you don't like it, and all you can do is find fault, then don't watch it.' Seems fair enough, really. Yes, your opinion is certainly relevant; but so are the opinions of people who know and like the show, and if you're going to criticise then you have to expect someone to take exception.

For myself, I think that criticising the special effects on a TV show that has a budget of - what, £10 or £12 million for 13 episodes (as opposed to £100 million or more for a two-hour movie) is rather like shooting fish in a barrel. What the shows might lack in SFX - personally, I think they're fine - they more than make up for in intelligence, humour, and inventiveness. There's more than one big screen SFX blockbuster that could learn a lot from watching a few episodes of Doctor Who, and seeing how far a good, clever script will get you, as opposed to depending on special effects to bail you out. 'Never mind the quality, look at that CGI!'

Hi Barbara, sorry to hear about your husband, I know what you're going through, my father recently had a major heart attack and almost died.

"'If you don't like it, and all you can do is find fault, then don't watch it.' Seems fair enough, really. Yes, your opinion is certainly relevant; but so are the opinions of people who know and like the show, and if you're going to criticise then you have to expect someone to take exception."

I have to say who really gives a fuck.

I've really enjoyed episodes and I haven't enjoyed others.

Simple as that.

I made simple, honest comments about the show. This is supposed to be an amicable, enjoyable easygoing amicable board with good craic.

This is really lame, Babs.

The fact that you need to reply to this and the manner of your husbands comments suggests there is something really wrong with your lives.

Thanks, Ally. Now waiting for him to be transferred to Vancouver (we hope tomorrow) for an angiogram.

Christopher did the smart thing on Sunday morning, and had me drive him to our local hospital as soon as he felt the chest pains (as opposed to doing what so many people do, according to our doctor: have a couple of Tums and go lie down, hoping it'll go away). We have a very smal hospital in Ashcroft, but the nurses and doctor were wonderful and did absolutely everything right, including administering a very powerful clot-busting drug that almost certainly prevented more damage. Christopher's in good spirits, all things considered, and hasn't had any recurrence of the chest pain, which is positive. I'm currently in a hotel in Kamloops so I can visit him a lot, as opposed to making the 55 mile (one way) trip from Ashcroft every day. I'll be going back up to the hospital in a few minutes, and will pass on your good wishes.

Yes, well, you can kick the amiability factor up a couple of notches by not resorting to namecalling. My name is Barbara, and I intensely dislike being called Babs.

quote:

As you know nothing about us, perhaps you should hold off on the comments about our lives.

As for needing to reply: I've been dropping by this board for several years now, and right at this particular moment in time am atempting, through various means, to keep some semblance of normality in my life as I sit alone in a hotel room in a strange city between trips to the hospital to visit my husband of 16 years. However, perhaps it's best if I just leave now, since it's aparently okay for you to voice your opinion, but not okay for anyone to disagree with you (and without calling you names or resorting to insulting comments about your life).

Hope all is well with your husband. My dad made, and continues to make, a good recovery after a recent heart attack. Like you I drove him to hospital although he insisted it was arthritis and wanted to go to the physio!

That whole post was directed at Barbara.

@ Huw

You still seem a tad petulent yourself after the discussion about the teenage photographs. You became slightly hysterical and prone to accusations there as well.

There is nothing petulent about replying to comments that seemed to me rather intemperate and inapropriate.

I made simple honest comments about a SciFi prog on a Saturday afternoon. The fact that this has blown up is farcical.

Eh? What does that thread have to do with this one? You're still going on about that stuff?!? Jeez...

The way you snapped just now at Barbara was completely out of line. She said nothing even remotely offensive to you, and you come back with a belligerent, antagonistic response, right after hearing that her husband has had a heart attack. Real classy. Someone simply disagrees with your assessment of Doctor Who, and you get all bent out of shape about it.

And yes, I'm being belligerent now too, but I'm guessing I'm not the only one who was rubbed the wrong way by your thoughtless comments to Barbara. I sometimes think you need to calm down and grow up a little, man. Really.

Thanks for the good wishes, everyone. Just back from a couple of hours at the hospital, and it looks as if Christopher might be heading to Vancouver tomorrow; which means I'll be checking out of here and driving down there to check in somewhere else. I like to travel, but not for this reason.

Barbara, I've also posted on the All Hallows list but would like to add my best wishes here. Don't let Chris do any work for a good while – he will need rest and quiet, and so will you! Take care.

I am not a Dr. Who fan, and so any thread with "Dr. Who" in it is usually ignored by me; except that I was particularly bored tonight, wandered in here... and see a member is not well. I hope Christopher is quickly up to snuff, and that both of you get back soon to what is heaven on Earth: normal life.

Thanks, Craig. Yes, normal life is looking decidedly appealing at the moment. Everyone: be thankful for what you have, because it can be snatched away, through no fault or doing of your own, in the blink of an eye.

Again I hope Christopher makes a full and quick recovery, Barbara. It's the real world and family that matters.

Dear Barbara,

So sorry to hear Christopher is unwell, you are both in my thoughts.

I haven't forgotten how supportive you both have been to me.

Best from gcw

Very sorry to hear about Chrstopher, Barbara.

As moderator of this board, I have to ask involved parties what they wish me to do about it. I've just got back from a meeting at work to this thread. Would folk prefer it deleting?

Griff: for the record, I think your comments, or at least the way you've gone about expressing them, are rather questionable.

No problems, Gary. The way I expressed them were too strong on reflection and I mean you no harm, Barbara. Real life is too important to waste.

Thanks again, all. Just heard that Christopher is being transferred to Vancouver General tomorrow morning, for an angiogram (possible angioplasty) tomorrow afternoon; if all goes well we'll all be home on Saturday. Fingers crossed. I get to sleep in my own bed tonight, which will be nice, and our son Tim is glad to hear that Mom is coming home tonight and Dad will be home at the weekend.
