Just wondering what everyone's favourite Ramsey book cover is? I know there has been some fantastic artwork for the limited editions in recent years, but my favourite has to be the following, for reasons I'll explain:

DarkCompanions

This is the 1982 Fontana paperback edition of Dark Companions, and is the reason I got into Ramsey's stories. I remember browsing the horror books in my local Woolworths store, spotting this cover, and thinking "this is just what I was looking for". It turned out it was!

Not only did it turn me on to Ramsey's work, but it also sums up nicely in one simple picture why I like horror so much - ie. the idea of something horrible lurking in the mundane.

So, what's your favourite Ramsey book cover, and why?

Whoops, sorry! That was bigger than I thought it was going to be.

I've always loved the cover art on the Little Brown hardback edition of Waking Nightmares. The simplicity of the image is lovely, and I always wondered what those two people were waiting for as they stared along that train line...

That's exactly the one I would have chosen, Gary. By no means the strangest image, but it has a certain mystery to it which appeals.

I can't scan book covers, but the UK paperback of Midnight Sun is a particular favourite. The dark Companions cover reproduced above would be scarier without the little glove puppet, I think. Even though it's unlikely, in that position, to be a glove.

Ah, yes. Me too. And also what might be coming out of the tunnel ...

Didn't I read somewhere that Ramsey doesn't like that particular cover image?

The cover art for the Headline The Long Lost, with the old woman's face brooding over the house, was good.

Yes, 'The Long Lost' would be my favourite cover as well as possibly my favourite novel, to date.

I always found the 'Dark Companions' cover a bit rude. Like the thing's pubic hair has a life of its own.

Narnia was never like that!!

A bit off-topic, but here's a crayon study my father did based on the first pages of "The Inhabitant of the Lake". He did an oil painting after that, a bit hard to scan I'm afraid.

Gary, if you want to delete this, by all means do so. Hard to believe the original is a small picture, really.

Hubert - glad to see I'm not the only one who gets image sizes a bit mixed up! Great drawing btw.

Stevie - "I always found the 'Dark Companions' cover a bit rude. Like the thing's pubic hair has a life of its own."
Never thought of it that way before!

Thanks for making me chuckle this morning fellas!

I liked the Dark Companions cover.
The train track thing - are they commiting suicide?
Hubert - your dad paints? Is he into horror? Have you any more images by him?

@ Tony: yes he does and he is. I have three paintings and a charcoal drawing by him. Various other paintings are in the possession of my sister and other members of my awful family. I always try to convince him he should do more, and I believe he has been asked to do an exhibit, but he sees himself primarily as a 'painter for the holidays', I think. Unfortunately I don't have the proper photographic equipment to do these works justice.

I like it too, Hubert. Very atmospheric.

The Tor (US) edition of Dark Companions has an effectively creepy cover featuring a demented-looking puppet cradling a scared child. It's the first edition I owned, and I think I like it even more than the leg-coming-out-of-the-wardrobe one.

I rather like some of the recent PS covers too - The Grin of the Dark and Thieving Fear are pretty good, I reckon.
I can scan 'em if anyone's not seen them.

I have a print of Vincent Chong's extraordinary artwork for Thieving Fear hanging on my landing wall - it's on what I call the Wall of Chong.

Oh 'eck, I hadn't even considered that it might be a breach of copyright to show a cover scan. It isn't, is it?

I have that one! Read so many times it's nearly in tatters.

I've always been fond of the Arkham House Demons by Daylight. Reading the stories in a book with a different cover simply wouldn't do.
