Crawley is a town somewhere between London and Brighton; near Gatwick Airport as a matter of fact. The first Crawley WordFest is due to take place there next week. I've just blogged about it here: http://rhysaurus.blogspot.com/ Or you can ignore my ramblings and go straight to the festival website: http://wordfestcrawley.org/ Is there anything there that might interest horror or dark fantasy fans? Dunno. Maybe. That's for you to say. I'll be there from Sunday to Tuesday, flouncing. |

I used to live there! Part dump, part lovely. Tilgate forest is fantastic, if sadly largely fenced off (which strangely adds to the sense of mystery and magic). |

Sigh. This was one of my first jobs working here, laying/raking the grounds for this place. I hope the people who use it appreciate its beauty. http://www.glendale-golf.com/course-2-tilgate-forest-golf-centre-gallery.aspx |

I used to live two minutes from this! Walk my dog round it (it was empty, though an office at one end wasn't). One dark rainy night I even broke in and had a look around. WELL creepy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadfield_House,_Crawley A lovely, mysterious place. Anyone could walk round it outside, like being posh for free for a bit.

It was like Auf Wiedersehen Pet working on that land, a really mixed bunch of people from skinheads to actors. We'd talk movies and books and God, and I'm sure it was all good for us to mix like that. 30 years on I still miss it, sitting under pines in the rain eating our butties, watching the odd deer jump silently by.

Thanks for that, Tony! Interesting and strange... "...sitting under pines in the rain eating our butties, watching the odd deer jump silently by." Nice bit of writing that, actually. |

Thanks Rhys! If you have time head for Tilgate Park/forest, and be slightly frightened by the scale of the 'Champion Trees' seen through the wire fence. |

"Is there anything there that might interest horror or dark fantasy fans?" Presumably yes, if this is true: "WORDfest is Crawley’s first ever festival dedicated to celebrating words and writing in its many forms." |

It might not be true, though, Ramsey! |

I'm in the window of Waterstone's today, writing a story. In Crawley. Pop along and gawp, if you like... Anyone who wants to be a character in that story should come inside the shop and tell me and I'll bung them in... |
