I'm exceptionally chuffed to announce that I've been involved in a little genre event organisation. Well, I haven't actually organised the event, but I've been liasing between the authors concerned and the event organiser.

It occurred to me that this lovely genre of ours doesn't get enough exposure amongst the general populace - so wouldn't it be nice to get some involvement in the UK literature festival scene, to try to widen the appeal of the genre? To that end, I'm pleased to announce that Messrs Ramsey Campbell, Mark Morris and Peter Crowther will be doing readings (under the BFS umbrella) at Ilkley Literature Festival, West Yorkshire, on Tuesday 11th October from 7.30 - 9.00pm (precise venue to be announced later).

Of course, although my main aim is to get people who wouldn't normally go for the genre interested (and interested in the BFS itself too), I have this horrible fear at the back of my mind that nobody in Ilkley will be "into that kind of thing", so if some of you folks could come along too, that would be brilliant.

My intention is actually to try to link up with more lit fests in other parts of the UK next year - I've simply started with my "local" to see how it goes. So I'm going to be looking for authors (horror, SF, fantasy, weird, basically anything which is catered for by the BFS) in all parts of the country who might be willing to take part. If anyone reading this would be interested, please get in touch with me at callag at blueyonder dot co dot uk (obviously, change that into a proper email address). And if you have a particular local lit fest in mind, please let me know that too. Thanks!

Well done, Caroline! I'll try my best to come along - will organise my working days so I'm in the area.

Cheers, chaps! Hope to see lots of you there.

I forgot to give you a link to the Ilkley Lit Fest website:
http://www.ilkleyliteraturefestival.org.uk

But there isn't much on there at the moment as they haven't fully sorted the programme yet, of course.

It's a great lit fest. Just to give you an idea of the kind of people I've seen there over the years (and you may cringe at some of these - I'm afraid they have the "celeb" authors too):

Alan Bennett, Gerald Scarfe, Bryan Talbot, Sebastian Peake (son of Mervyn), John Mortimer, Iain Banks, Jeremy Dyson, Paddy Ashdown, Johnnie Walker, Rick Wakeman, Vic Reeves, Bary Cryer and Graeme Garden, and .. er .. Alan Tichmarsh.

Oh dear, will the weather be that bad? Can we all fit under it?

Good job, Caroline! I wish I was closer to the UK sometimes so that I could go to these events.

It might be that bad, Ramsey - we do get a lot of rain around here in October.

Seriously, thanks to you - and to Mark and Pete if they're reading this (or even if they aren't) - for being so willing to do this. I'm really looking forward to it, and I hope this will be the start of many such BFS/lit fest link-ups I can have a hand in.

Huw - I wish you were closer too. Would love to meet you.

I hope so, Glyn. You're doing a darn good job with your Twisted Tales events. Well done, you!
