Some bad news is the remake of THE PRISONER, with Ian McKellen as number 2 (I presume they're not changing them most weeks like the original series did), and Jim Caviezel as number 6, is definitely going ahead now:-

It was meant to be Chris Eccleston. Bet it has the feel of Minority Report or something.

My brother reckons that the ending of the original series wasn't just tagged on but had been announced at the start of every single episode.

2 - You are number 6, I am number 2
6 - Who is number 1
2 - You are, number 6

Interesting theory.

That's a theory that's been around for many years, and certainly plausible...

I try to keep an open mind but:

Any remake of THE PRISONER won't be THE PRISONER & I can't even entertain the idea of watching it. That shit version of THE AVENGERS is still in my brain somewhere much as I don't want it to be.

BLAKE'S 7 remake to come too . . .

I wonder if the Avon calling gag will still get dragged out on light entertainment shows . . .?

My feelings exactly, which is why I reacted to the original story as I did. I guess it's possible a new version would have interesting things to say about our times, but usually when I see the words "ITV Drama" my heart sinks, and so I don't really have high hopes at all. I very much doubt they'll use Portmeirion as a location either.

I think could be possible to do the most brilliant updating of THE PRISONER, but it will never happen. People say it was of its time, what they don't understand is that it was unheard of for that kind of money to ever be spent on what was essentially one (slightly mad and very egotistical) man's vision. Which is why it's brilliant. And why it will never happen again. Certainly not with an ITV committee behind it.

Even the mighty Lew Grade had no idea what was going on towards the end. Could you see the creatively redundant execs at ITV relinquishing control to a show that doesn't fit comfortably within their advertisers' marketing brackets? No love interest? No young trendy characters? No adorable 60s soundtrack to flog?

What would be needed in today's TV land would be for some trusted, respected producer with a proven track record to come along with a proposal that looks like 'Doc Martin' on paper but goes progressively and seriously mental as the show goes on, while never becoming as confusing, rambling or silly as 'Lost' but has some big questions that you promise will be answered in the last episode.

A last episode which you would then use to fuck over your entire audience and leave them shaking their fists at the screen and at themselves before realising that was the whole point of the thing in the first place.

The fact that there is to be just one 'Number 2' is a fuck up from the off..I mean..The different '2's each week (with the occasional return - Leo McKern..Marvellous) was part of the appeal. Each one with a different personality. Some weak, others strong, some vain, some almost a friend.

Oh dear. I'm with the naysayers. it will be bollocks.

Here's another remake to "look forward to":-

http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=videoBC&bcpid=714034225&bclid=713046265& bctid=1646146839

They've remade THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL.

Starring Keanu Reeves.

I'll keep an open mind, but this one feels like artistic rape. The original was a childhood favourite.

These, however, look brilliant:

Bugger! The links didn't quite work - I'm talking about The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Burn After Reading.

Mmm. A TV series remake of The Prisoner. Rather than reamking it as a film. Mmm. I haven't seen any of the TV series remakes, such as Battle Star Galactica.

It might just work.
