What a load of crap.

I guess this one has been disected (!) already, but I just got to watch it the other night...I DID like the first one, but no, this was crap.

It could..MAYBE have been rescued if ...(SPOILER) after the rich American girl had paid off the Torturers they had just dragged her off & bunged her back in an S&M cell for a sesh rather than just giving her a bloody tattoo.

Ker-rap!

I really enjoyed it, in a kind of crappy Euro-horror way. It's one of those where I know it's rubbish but get a kick out of it anyway.

I found the focus on the torturers very strong, but agree that the ending was a bit of a let down.

I don't know what it is about these Hostel films, but I think they're great.

The first one was brilliant. The second - well, I knew it would be crap, but I saw it anyway. And **SPOILER ALERT** I knew in the first five minutes how it would end, given the muchness made of the richness of the obvious final girl. Which was totally lame. (Love your alternative ending, Gcw!)

Still, the Elisabeth Bathory scene was pretty cool. If I were a member of Elite Hunting, that's probably what I'd do with my (male) victim.

The Bathory scene was excellent, but it felt incongrous compared with the the rest of the picture. As if Roth had suddenly decided a homage to Borowczyk, Franco et al would look cool plonked into the middle of his movie (actually that probably is what he thought}). Oh and it was nice to see the still lovely Edwige Fenech at the start. And the music's brilliant.

Just rewatched it and I stand by everything I've already said. Almost the whole of the original HOSTEL had a creeping, disturbing, thoroughly uncomfortable sense to it, augmented by all those lovely little touches like Takashii Miike's 'You will spend al your money if you go in there', the slightly tarnished look of the girls the day after they've seduced the boys, even the railway station felt scary. Hostel II has none of this - it feels too slick and uninvolving - like a bad Hollywood rip-off of a fine European original.

I've been in that spa, though - that bit was filmed in Iceland. I got out again of course.

But only because I had enough money...

And you were male (presumably still are). Hostel 2 was for girls.

Did it disturb you as much as part 1 Niki?

It didn't scare me at all. The original is one of my favourite horror films, but the second went too far down the path of the last dying efforts in the 80s slasher film genre. Zero atmosphere and too much terminal hipness to be scary or even creepy. It had some entertaining moments, but no, it wasn't disturbing.

Spoiler...

I was scared when that guard didn't put water on the prisoner's head in The Green Mile. Didn't see the last half of the film but I did suspend my disbelief at that moment and was horrified. Did I have an off day?

Niki - ah you are a fine woman! I agree. It's not scary at all. And yes - I think the original is up there as a seriously disturbing piece of work for the noughties. And yes the follow up feels like the tail end of a genre. Zero atmosphere - quite right. The Bathory segment is outrageously sexy in a let's smear and stroke a naked female body with as many fluids as possible (nothing wrong with that) but there is no suspense, no thrills. But I still love the music
