Well, as I presumed I would from the other thread, I did say "oh fuck off" about a minute in to the episode - "he's regenerating" - "oh no he isn't".
Well that's ok then. The equivalent of the old saturday morning serial where people are in a car and shouting "look out for the cliff". Car drives over the cliff, but in the recap at the start of the next episode, folk scream "look out for the cliff", have plenty of time to get out of the car, and then it goes over.
And bloody K-9 and Mickey were in it!

I really didn't understand a word of it!
Everything but the kitchen sink.
(and Daleks are almost like cones).

The words 'cheating bastard' escaped my lips twice during that episode (both times directed at the writer) - once regarding the 'regeneration', and then again about a minute from the end regarding the companion 'death'.

Rollicking stuff, but mostly utter balls.

:-)

One thing I wasn't too happy about was the BBC's decision that, as this final episode was hotly anticipated by millions of fans, they would make it an item within the BBC News programmes three times to my knowledge, and quite possibly more, and I think blatant advertising within the news is wrong.

Not the highlight of the series

John (good name there!) has it when he says it was rollicking but balls. Very superficial, very fluffy, a bit silly, a bit sad, a few good lines. not the swansong I would have gone out on if I was Russell T. It was kitchen sink (ie everything but rather than some Karel Reisz-Albert Finney inspired piece) that felt very much like Chinese Food TV - OK at the time but an hour later I feel I needed something far more substantial.

And they should have used Eve Myles more, if only because I have a predilection for her

"Rollicking stuff, but mostly utter balls."

I agree. But I really enjoyed it.

I think because I'm not a big Dr Who geek I take this with much more of a dose of salt than a lot of other people. It's daft fun which often hits you right in the heart. Parts of tonight's did that, and Catherine tate was wonderful - her fate was heartbreaking.

Yeah, not the best. But then I liked the ending with Rose getting her own doctor - that really affected me for some reason. If only they had kept it small. Not dull, or bad, just not what it had been built up to being. The fact the Doctor did not regenerate felt like a cheat, yes, and wobbled our trust. But still - many good, absolutely brilliant touches - I just wish they'd been in a better episode.

Plonked Fellowship of the Rings on after. After Who it felt flat and seriously slow. At least Who has a sense of life, and is stuffed with ideas.

Oh, come on! The LORD OF THE RINGS films and DOCTOR WHO are hardly comparable. WHO is cosy fun and sometimes even shows flashes of real intelligence and imagination, but it's just not in the same league as Jackson's films. Not even close. It's daft fun, as Gary said. Of course FELLOWSHIP is going to seem a little slow after watching WHO - LotR is a gradually unfolding three-hour epic, not a 40+ minute made-for-ADD-generation television show. ;-)

I don't mean the pacing in LOTR; I meant the fact that the moments were often just filled with little meaningful looks and nods but little else. I think LOTR could have done with being a little more shot from the hip, a little rawer. I'm still sad Boorman never got to do them.

>>And they should have used Eve Myles more, if only because I have a predilection for her

I know someone who's the spitting image of her. She was single till recently, Lord P. If only I'd known of your interest earlier, I could've pointed her in the direction of your harem.

As for WHO . . .

SPOLIER

It was complete crappy bollocks. The Dr Donna thing was my worst nightmare come true, whereupon WHO turned completely into a Catherine Tate sketch at the end. Clearly RTD was overcompensating for his mistaken decision not to put Tennant in the previous series's' finale and replace him with the CGI thing. So he had two Docs and decided that wasn't enough. And I wasn't thrilled with the notion of leaving Rose the sex toy Doctor either, though the good thing about it is that it's actually an unhappy ending because surely the human Doc -- head full of time lord stuff -- will soon die as Donna would've . . .

But Tate's gone. Hurrah! Roll on the cybermen in Victorian England. It'll give RTD his chance to have his Victorian companion.

I still prefer the older Whos, despite the often cheesy effects. They spent more time on characterisation and had more suspense and atmosphere. Some of the new ones are good, but it's often all very rushed and frantic, with an attempt to squeeze in as many one-liners as possible. The music is often intrusive, adding to the overly manic feel and, while I like Tennant, I wish he'd calm down a bit with the silly eye-bulging and twitchiness, the constant straining of the 'wacky' factor. His repeated rapturising about the human race can be really cloying too. More episodes like Blink and fewer like the ones full of Daleks would be welcome, as far as I'm concerned...

Yes, but the Sex Toy Doc (Oi! You nicked my line! ) didn't have another brain to impinge upon. He would have had room - there was no clash.
Thing is, these duff eps can sometimes improve with a second watch, which I'll give it. But it was sad that all the ideas it left us conjuring up ourselves the previous week were better. It inspires our imaginations then nicks the stuff back.

But yes; I love it toom despite that.

Was reading an interview with Moffat last week and he says he misses the old Whos too, the mystery of the first episode in a run. He's right; we used to get a full half hour of juicy build up.

Thank you Mr Lynch! I appreciate the thought, even though the old harem can be a bit uncontrollable at times .

I prefer the old Whos, but I've just put that down to me being 'of a certain age'. I actually own some the old stories on DVD but I don't have any of the new series. It's funny how the end of the universe as we know it could somehow be rendered more claustrophobically terrifying by a couple of actors in a brightly lit room with no windows than by a million CGI daleks.

And the music is far too bloody intrusive and over the top. The odd electronic stinger of solo cello line worked better as well. But not Carey Blyton's computerised kazoo from the Silurians. I bloody hated that.

And I suspect the 'Sex Toy' doc will end up doing himself in anyway as he can't possibly be happy in a long term relationship with chavvy Ms Piper.

Just as thought....What happened to Billy Pipers' ability to ACT??

She looked so bored with preceedings. perhaps she thought the script was a load of cobblers too.

The computerised kazoo! I watched the Silurians episodes not long ago and remember cringing a bit at parts of that score.

They could bring in Sean Pertwee as a new Doctor. Or have him return as the third Doctor -- suitably caped and bouffanted, he could probably pass for his dad in another ten years or so.

I loved the leisurely build-up of the older Whos. Nobody has patience these days - they want action, right now :-/

They've gone too far from what would happen in Dr Who.

It feels more like NEXT GENERATION now.

They lost the feeling.

And why did Davros want to destroy reality? Surely that would have destroyed him too, and why would the Daleks destroy themselves?

Plot hole.
