Why didn't anyone tell me David was dating the girl in the fireplace???
(I knew there was electricity in their kiss!)

Though I hear it's over now?
:-(

So sad except I can't help but wonder if I could kidnap him and pull him into a phone booth!!!

Meow.

No; they split up. He ditched her via phone call, allegedly. Apparently she wanted kids and to settle down.
Now he's going out with 'The Doctor's Daughter'.
He's in hamlet next year - we're all going to see it. You wanna come?

I don't blame her for wanting kids. I want kids too. And little Time Lord babies would be all the more appealing...

It sucks being a girl - with the whole biological clock and all.
:-(

I don't know who "the Doctor's Daughter" is. I've only just finished Season 2. Balled my eyes off.

I SO want to go see Hamlet!!!
When is it???

A - the biggest blubfest in Dr Who ever is coming, then, in Family of Blood. Keep us posted. Actually Gridlock choked me up a bit, too. All those hymns.

I've just borrowed season 3 from my sister - but first she's making me watch season one of TORCHWOOD.

A - Torchwood is so patchy, and yet I'm glad I watched it all. A couple of the episodes were absolutely wonderful, and incredibly moving. The one where you meet the real Captain Jack just made me bawl my eyes out, too. Second series is not so good, but has it's moments. But don't put off Who - intersperse it. Yes, Family of Blood is series three.

I just watched the pilot of Torchwood. To be honest, if I didn't already know and like Capt. Jack. I wouldn't be inspired to watch more. In some ways the writing displayed some smart ways "in" to the material. But it just didn't have the energy I was looking for. It felt kinda one note. Not enough humour. Not enough awe. Just kinda - blagh...

I'll keep watching though.

I agree with Tony - TORCHWOOD is patchy - it had a handful of ok episodes, but in the main feels quite shallow.
DOCTOR WHO is also patchy, but at its best can be superb - THE GIRL IN THE FIREPLACE, BLINK, MIDNIGHT...

Plus there's a certain exuberance to the Doctor. A vitality if you will that gets your... erm... energy flowing...

I agree about Torchwood -- it has some occasional above average moments, but on the whole it's very lazy, formulaic, uninspiring stuff. The characters are dull, and the insistence on portraying everyone as a promiscuous bisexual very quickly becomes tiresome. You get the sense that they think that throwing in random scenes or references to sex will automatically make the show seem more 'mature' and 'edgy', but the result is the opposite.

Compared with Doctor Who - itself decidedly patchy in terms of quality - Torchwood is pretty forgettable. It aims for a cross between
Doctor Who and a more adult version of Angel, and fails miserably, in my opinion. I'd rather (re)watch old episodes of good television than waste my time on this. There are so few good UK genre shows about these days.

I keep hoping someone will come along and make something of the same quality as Ultraviolet, but it seems that most people want shallow entertainment rather than genuinely thought-provoking drama -- or at least the people making these shows think this is what people want.

Any word on the new show Apparitions yet? It was originally due out earlier this year, but I believe it received the go-ahead for more episodes, so they're holding it until they're finished. It looks promising. Martin Shaw plays an exorcist, and I believe Joe 'Ultraviolet' Ahearne is involved.

Huw, that sounds very interesting.

As for Torchwood...I found it rather embarrassing. The kind of thing that gives SF a geeky image. The female lead is nice, though. :-)

Martin Shaw is so boring, though. Everyone used to say he was more the actor than Lewis Collins, but in retrospect it's Collins we see with the more mobile face, and the twinkle in his eyes. He was ace in Cuckoo's Nest.

I haven't read anything as funny as that since the description of CHAIN REACTION's protagonist being: "Keanu Reeves plays a quantum physicist."

It's a vampire thing. A lot of people rave about it but i couldn't watch it; societies of vampires in smart suits, things like that. I think!

It were excellent! It was far more thought-provoking and intelligent than any other recent vampire television series. Very downbeat, too - pretty much the opposite of Buffy (which I also love).

I don't like the notion of vampires in suits, though I guess on a basic symbolic level there's a sort of satisfaction in the image. Thing is I'm kind of sick of vampires. Having said that, I never thought I'd get into Buffy, and then ended up falling head over heals for it...

At any rate, I wouldn't know how to get my hands on it. But I'm usually curious when the likes of HUW recommends something...

We just watched the Buffy last night where Spike grabs a gun to go and kill her once and for all, then, finding her in tears when she's just found her mum might be dying just sits next to her and sort of touches her shoulder. If Ultraviolet is like that I might track it down...

That UFO show's on tonight, Tony. An incident around Todmorden, more famous for being the home for a while of Harold Shipman now.

(just back from a short holiday)

Ultraviolet is great! I bought the dvd set for something like 2 pounds a few years ago. I am not really into vampire movies & stories, but this series was better written than most. I thought they stopped it too early.

Adriana, I bought it on ebay, at that moment no-one else was bidding. It was a real bargain at 2 or 3 pounds.
I see a few for sale in ebay uk (amidst an avalanche of dvds of a movie with the same name), but that's the region 2 versionn and I now discover that a region 1 version is listed on ebay.com,
Alternatively, send me a mail at tom dot alaerts at gmail dot com, and I can help you get your greedy little hands on it!

Yep, Ultraviolet was excellent - and I usually hate vampire themed stuff. I'm sure a few of the vampires wore suits, but it wasn't a defining characteristic.

The show was serious, downbeat, gritty, and even managed to throw in some relevant themes. It also had some good acting, smart scripts and avoided the usual tired vampire cliches.

I bought the DVD ages ago. Might watch it again now. :-)
