So what did everyone think of Black Mirror? Personally, I thought it was rather good.

Terry - it's a new three part series by Charlie Brooker, he of immense sarcasm and the wonderful Dead Set.

I didn't think it was bad. Surprisingly mild, considering some of the vitriol Brooker's capable of in print. Overall it felt a bit like an extended sketch from Chris Morris's JAM series from a few years back, and I had the nagging suspicion that I was being lectured to (which tends to turn me off), but that whatever lesson I was supposed to be learning was unclear.

I loved it. Brooker conveyed a sense of inescapable doom laced with sheer farce. I agree with the Jam comparison, but found it less surreal and more unsettling. The extended shot of the Prime Minster sitting with sick dripping from his mouth after being forced to 'make love' to a pig for over an hour was pretty strong stuff.

Who would have watched the broadcast?

I saw the last ten minutes of this and thought it was pretty daft.

I failed to believe that the PM could achieve and then sustain an erection in order to have sex with a pig for over an hour (unless I missed some vital piece of information and he'd taken some kind of drug to keep his dick hard).

A better - and braver - writer might have examined the logistics of the situation in greater detail, and possibly created something as shocking as this was trying so hard to be.

He's seen taking what I assume was viagra before engaging in the act.

In a way the ending was the worst bit as Brooker throws in a couple of twists regarding the kidnapping that seem contrived and unlikely but up until then he does a good job at showing how the PM's capitulation goes from being completely unthinkable to shockingly inevitable.

Second episode of Black Mirror. Hmm, didn't involve me as much as the first one. The SF setting came across a little too much "Wow, what an insightful metaphor for our apathetic society" to be truly convincing. And all the minor characters were caricatures (probably deliberately but it was still annoying). And the ending was telegraphed well in advance. That said, the bit where the female lead has to make that terrible choice was heartbreaking.

Speaking of reality TV/Talent show type satire here's a short comic by mate Alec Worley. He writes for 2000AD but this is something he did for The Girly Comic a couple of years ago. http://factorfictionpress.co.uk/webcomic/2008/06/23/false-idols-1/
