When I heard what Claerkson had said about the strikers I thought it was a bit harsh even by his standards.

then I found a clip that gives his prededing comments. This then puts the entire thing in context.

He starts off saying that he thinks the strikes are good because there's no traffic etc, takes him back to the seventies, then he says "But because this is the BBC we need to have some balance" and goes on to make the bit that has been quoted out of context everywhere. A bit that is absolutely clearly joking and satirical. Whether you find it amusing or not, in it's context it cannot be described as offensive.
