I just came across these while looking for pictures of spooky churches. Nice to see Lovecraftian artwork that are atmosphere pieces instead of dramatic painting of Cthulhu clinging to the ruins of R'Lyeh. http://peteamachree.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d1r8i8z http://peteamachree.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d1ri5hq The guy's whole gallery is worth a look, there's some brilliantly moody Tolkein and post-apocalyptic stuff there. |

Stunning work! I would note, however, that Lovecraft described the nave of the church in question as 'almost eldritch', while the image in the second picture is of a nave whose eldritchness none would dispute. |

Very atmospheric and evocative indeed - and, as Joel pointed out, eldritch beyond dispute! Thanks for sharing, David. |

Oh hey, here's another horror artist I've been quite impressed with. His work covers everything from gothic to J-horror, vampires to Lovecraft. There's quite a few images in his gallery I thought would be great inspiration for short stories. http://super-sheep.deviantart.com/ |

Some excellent artwork there! I think I've heard the name S. Caruso somewhere before - perhaps he's done artwork for the Lovecraft Zine or something like that? The other guy's great too. There's some brilliant stuff on that deviantart site - but some rubbish too! |

Yes, I find the best way to explore Deviant Art is browsing through the "Favourites" galleries of artists you like, finding new artists and browsing their favourites and so on. I tend to stay away from the frontpage. Many years ago it was a very good artists community, unfortunately now it seems to be home to a lot of amateur porn and poor-quality teenage anime fan art. There's still gold there, though. |

Not DeviantArt this time, or necessarily Lovecraftian, but this Japanese artist has a wonderfully nightmarish series of paintings depicting massive red organic growths spreading across bleak, grim cityscapes. http://doumyakutosi.tumblr.com/ |

I have both the Coulthart and the Brecchia. The adaptation of "The Dunwich Horror" is part of an entire book of Lovecraft stories, Cthulhu, Les Humanoides Associés 1978, which also includes adaptations of "The Festival", "The Call of Cthulhu", "The Colour out of Space", "The Shadow over Innsmouth", "The Thing on the Doorstep", "The Haunter of the Dark" and "The Nameless City". All in French. I've never seen the Spanish or English-language versions. |

The Dunwich Horror was translated for an issue of Heavy Metal. Not sure about any of the other Lovecraft adaps he did. Not much of his work appears to be available in English unfortunately. |

Just discovered and going through the work of a Russian artist, Yaroslav Gerzhedovich. I was first really impressed by his foggy cityscapes but he's done some really beautiful, eerie horror and fantasy work too. This one's called The Doppelganger Sadly his only web presence seems to be Flickr, which I find a total chore to navigate. http://www.flickr.com/photos/39386717@N07/ |

I thought you might be interested (particularly Ramsey) to see this. Last year I contacted Dave Kendall regarding the above painting inspired by The Hands hoping to buy the original, but Dave told me, unfortunately, it was with a screenwriter in Los Angeles. He did however generously offer to paint me a new version; not a "copy" of the original but rather a reinterpretation. Last week I was presented with the new painting. I have to admit to being somewhat sceptical that the artist could reproduce something as disturbing as the original, and I opened the email attachment with a degree of trepidation. But I actually uttered an audible groan of horror when I saw it. It's wonderful. So this is the painting and I feel like a very lucky man to be able to have this hanging on the wall of my cottage.

I just found out the artist responsible for Patrick's painting, Dave Kendall, worked on a comic with Mike Carey which is available free online: http://madefirestudios.deviantart.com/art/Houses-of-the-Holy-Episode-1-362909354 Three monsters stalk 1930s Berlin. Reinhart Fohl is a senior clerk in Goebbels’ propaganda ministry, who’s recently made a dizzying discovery: the party gives its loyal servants so much support and so much latitude that he’s functionally omnipotent. Basilisks--reptilian in infancy, close to human in adulthood--turn to stone in their dotage. ‘Welcome’, a basilisk in its final sessile stage, has become an old patrician house, complete with portico and gables. Immortal vampire child Magda Bescu has to live--and to feed--otherwise the tumor in her brain, which is every bit as immortal as she is, will eat more and more of the healthy tissue and leave a bigger hole in her sanity and her memories. And in this place and this time, Magda has one other pressing problem: racially, she belongs to the Roma, the gypsy peoples. The eugenics laws of inter-war Germany have effectively declared open season on anyone of her race. |
