It's been a funny old day today. First, I get some junk mail in the post from an insurance company - addressed to Mrs Y Sodqblmge. It was the correct address, but where on earth did they get that name from?! My feeling is the Y should stand for Yolande! I think Mrs Yolande Sodqblmge should really be a character in a story by one of you guys. In fact, it's a shame Rhys isn't still around as it would be a perfect name for one of his characters. If any of you wants to use that name please let me know as I'd love to see it. Then, I'd parked next to our village Age Concern shop while I went to a few local shops. Getting back in the car I noticed something hanging up in their window display - a pair of handcuffs covered in pink fur!! I mean, who on earth would donate those to an Age Concern shop?! I guess I really should have gone in and explained to them that it might not be appropriate - they probably didn't realise. If they're still there tomorrow I may do - it depends on who's behind the counter. If it's one of the older ladies with a sense of humour I'll do so; if it's the young man who always smells of stale sweat I think I'll give it a miss! Honestly, our village isn't really so raunchy that they have sex toys in an Age Concern shop - it sounds like something you might find in Royston Vasey! |

Caroline, I don't want to come across as humourless, especially not in such a context, but doesn't the assumption that elderly people don't use playful bedroom accessories equate to an assumption that they don't have sex lives or that, if they do, their sex lives are purely vanilla? Both assumptions would be untrue, I'm sure. I agree that the shop may not have recognised the item in question, but I find its presence in an Age Concern shop heartening and makes my own future look that much brighter. |

I don't know what all the fuss is about. I bought a packet of branded felching straws from the Whitby branch last week. I'm more shocked by the fact Caroline got the company name wrong: it's Age UK now. |

Aw, sorry, Joel - I think you've misunderstood my meaning. Or maybe my meaning really IS wrong? Bear in mind that I'm of advanced years myself, and an outspoken supporter of the rights of older people, so I wasn't intending to imply that elderly people wouldn't use such things. I just found the presence of the handcuffs in a charity shop (it would have been - to me - funny no matter what the charity), in a rather stuffy little Yorkshire village, in full view of everyone quite funny. But maybe my sense of humour needs retuning ... (I should have pointed out too that they were in the window with a lot of children's toys, so the people in the shop clearly hadn't realised what they were for) Anyway, Joel, I'm sure your old age will be a highly enjoyable one in all respects, and I hope I haven't offended you or anyone else. Gary - I know it's Age UK now, combining Age Concern and Help the Aged, but they haven't fully sorted out their "marriage" and our village charity shop still goes by the old Age Concern rules and has the old name on its frontage. I found this out when I tried to buy a pack of Christmas cards from them last year but couldn't. Help the Aged do Christmas cards, Age Concern don't, apparently. |

Mind you, I tell you what would be *really* funny - the look on my husband's face if I went in to the shop tomorrow, bought the pink fluffy handcuffs, and presented them to him for his upcoming birthday ... |
