This is one of the few horror movies announced recently that's really grabbed my attention.

"Citadel is a story about pure terror. Packs of twisted feral children prowl the dark urban landscape of Edens town, the council estate from Hell. Concealed beneath hooded tops, they attack innocent adults with septic syringes to harvest their blood and abduct small children to swell their ranks. Abandoned by the police, the small community that remains is plagued by the brutal and rampant gangs that few truly understand. Emerging at night, they are especially drawn to anyone showing fear - in fact they can see it and sense it. When Tommy¹s pregnant wife Joanne is viciously attacked, it turns his world upside down. Joanne is left in a coma. As a result of the trauma, Tommy suffers crippling agoraphobia rendering him housebound and barely able to look after their infant daughter Elsa. Trapped in Edenstown, Tommy desperately needs to leave. Before he can escape however, Tommy's worst nightmare comes true - Elsa is kidnapped. To save his daughter, he is forced to trust a vigilante priest who understands the horrific truth about the gangs. Tommy must now face the demons of his past by entering the one place that he fears the most – an abandoned tower block called the Citadel."

The director did a pretty good four minute short called the Faeries of Blackheath Woods: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_EyPVV-WxA

Never heard of this, but it sounds right up my street - to the extent that certain images you mention could have been lifted from my novels.

Demonic Hoodies.

An abandoned tower block as the locus of strange forces (mine's called the Needle).

I really have to see this film!

Actually yeah, when I read this my first thought was "sounds like a Gary McMahon story". I have a copy of The Concrete Grove sitting on my "to read" pile right now.

Sounds so much like The Concrete Grove it might be worth looking into when it was made. But it may be coincidence, and there may be common influences on the general approach such as Ben Leech or Conrad Williams. That's assuming the director reads in the genre, which sounds probable.

Or screenwriter, presumably.

OOoh, Cradlegrave sounds bloody great. Why have I not heard of this before? Just ordered a copy - thanks for the heads-up, Ramsey.

Joel, to be fair, demonic hoodies and a possessed council tower block are fairly obvious updates of familiar trops. I'd be amazed if no one else had thought of them prior to me.

One of the films shown at the last Halifax Ghost Story Festival was about a possessed council tower block (in Glasgow, I think?) - problem is, I can't remember what the film was called. It definitely wasn't Citadel though. I must admit, I thought of your Concrete Grove, Gary, when I saw it.

Of course! You were there anyway weren't you - or didn't you folk disappear before the last film screening in the evening?

Zed, it's not just those specific ideas but the whole feel and shape of the film (as far as I can judge from the synopsis). Hopefully it's just two creative minds thinking alike.

Caroline – yes, they did disappear before the last film. They didn't leave, they just disappeared, piece by piece, until only the eyes and teeth were left. You have repressed your memory of the whole grim experience.

I hear you, Joel. But I very much doubt the screenwriter is one of the 6 people who bought my book.

You know, this is one of the things I love about hanging around the internet with folk like you - your wonderful imaginations. If only I had the imagination of a writer like you, Joel!

Of course Heartless did the demonic hoodies and urban blight thing two or three years ago, too.

Just saw an interview with the director of this that I thought was pretty interesting. Though I think "dirty string" is supposed to be "dirty syringe" in the first answer.
