You'll probably never forget the Joker's magic trick.

This was a beautifully shot, well acted, brooding and sometimes ambiguous film that was quite violent and disturbing. Nods to Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman for bringing the film together. Gary Oldman was really good in this.

Heath Ledger somehow slips crookedly right into Nolan's version of the Joker and delivers a memorable, quite literally explosive performance. He completly fills the screen, and steals all the scenes. Add that to Nolan's style, and the universe he sets up in the first film, and the result is quite stunning.

Also a great noir crime picture. And a fantastic opening scene. What more do you want.? Then it has action chases shot in epic 70mm, in superb surround sound. Go see. And there's an X-files trailer.

Do you get the feeling that Bale is sick of hearing about Hedger?

Nah. I'm sure he has plenty to deal with right now as he's on the front pages of all the world's newspapers because of a domestic dispute with his mother and sister. Forget the bullshit. See the movie.

Maybe they kept going on about Leath Hedger.

Christian Bale is great - he's just so micey. Does anyone else know that word? Micey? Antagonistic; dismissive; unlikeable yet utterly alluring. When you watch him give interviews, he puts you on edge.

Did anyone here see Bale in Nolan's The Prestige? I really enjoyed that one.

Great film, Tom - amazing, I thought. Nolan is a genuine talent.

THE PRESTIGE is excellent, although, as is often the case, I prefer the book (but then it's a different medium). I like the top'n'tail set in the present day in the book, which is absent in the film.

Mick,
Not sure how soon I'll be able to read it, but I just picked up a copy of the Christopher Priest novel. I'm interested in comparing the structure of the novel to that of the film. Thanks!

I enjoyed THE PRESTIGE. Lovely. Haunting. For the most part really well executed.

Haven't seen DARK KNIGHT yet. Looking forward to it...

Saw the dark knight at the local IMAX on Friday -truly awesome piece of film making. For Heath Leger to steal the show was a huge achievement when you look at all the other great stuff going on.

And you were right about the magic trick. I don't think I'll forget it in a hurry.

The film has now taken 400 million US dollars in the US box office alone- shattering the third record. It was the fastest grossing movie of all time on the opening day, the fastest movie to pass the 300 million dollar mark, and now it seems like it is going to beat Star Wars and ET! Incredible.

I'd still like to see the success of films judged by tickets sold rather than money made - this film is most likely going to beat Star Wars partly because the tickets are ten times more expensive now.
The strategic voting on imdb is laughable at the moment, with folk giving The Godfather a vote of 1 to drag it down.

I must say I preferred BATMAN BEGINS but this is still a film that's worth watching. And Heath Ledger makes a tremendous villain

Plenty of folk trying to do that to The dark Knight as well.

I agree with JLP. I saw Dark Knight on Sunday and loved it. However, Batman Begins has more atmosphere, and that wonderful mythic quality (it's an origin story, after all), and a slower pace that allows me to enjoy Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman's characters more. I plan to get the DK DVD and rewatch the film, but I doubt I'll watch it as often as I will the first film.

Indeed. It all started out when folk who'd seen THE DARK KNIGHT voted it ten out of ten and it got to number 1 on the imdb chart. Fans of THE GODFATHER and SHAWSHANK then voted DK a 1, to bring it down from number 1, and then the DK fans did the same to GODFATHER and SHAWSHANK. The imdb chart was never much more than a joke anyway really...

I haven't had a chance to use the joker's magic trick at work yet. I have however been using Harvey Dent's decision making method to spook a few people

Dark Knight is one of the best films I have ever seen. I think it has changed my life, made me see what quality is again. I've not been so astonishede and moved by a film in a long, long time. Think Taxi Driver, Godfather (it's harder-hitting than that one though). I saw it last night and couldn't sleep for hours after, just thinking how great it was, and how much mark it wil leave on my psyche. It's an instant classic, up there with Shane, with which it shares many parralels.

I'm so going to see The Dark Knight soon - up until now I have to agree with Adriana, that The Prestige reigns supreme at the box office!

Went to see Dark Knight this afternoon. Absolutely and utterly fantastic. Heath Ledger's performance totally freaked me out.

And I went today. Liked it, generally speaking, but had expected more after all the media hullabaloo. Ledger is great, that goes without saying. He should have had more screen time.

Now here's another one which is lost on me. I was a huge fan of Batman Begins the first time I watched it, although it lost its impact considerably on second viewing. But The Dark Knight for me just fell completely flat.

My problems around it are mainly with Nolan's direction. There were too many scenes which should have been fantastic but which, in the end, just frittered out. Or otherwise just ended so abruptly that you were left thinking: "Oh, was that it?" With the exception of the chase sequence in the middle of the film I don't remember being thrilled or excited once. There was never any real sense of danger - Gotham City seemed to be almost uninhabited apart from criminals, policemen and vigalantes.

I had similar problems with the direction of The Prestige - which really needed someone a bit showy to reflect the structure of the film, but in the end the whole thing was as flat as a pigeon in Gob Bluth's magician's jacket!

The script could have done with a bit of pruning too - it suffered from too many false attempts at a climax, and it was a bit of an error to move the focus away from the central conflict to the people of Gotham City (just in case you thought they didn't exist).

Bale and Maggie Gyllenhall were underused. The standout performance for me was Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon. As for Heath Ledger - he was decent enough, although he seemed to be channelling Michael Keaton in Beetlejuice from time to time. And let's be honest, acting against Eric Roberts is going to make anyone look good!

The strange thing is, I've made these points to friends of mine who really love the film and they tend to always say "Yeah, you're right, but it was still great, wasn't it?"

Mystifying.

Right, after this and my moan on the Cloverfield thread I'm off to find a thread where I can post something positive!
