Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.

Or, as Clement Freud said, if you eat healthily, don't smoke or drink, you don't live longer; it just feels longer.

Because, obviously, COPD is fun all the way.

Sorry, but I've had it up to here with testosterone-overload cases insisting that the only way to have a good life is to condemn yourself to an early and painful death. Think of Chris Evans: one drinking buddy dead and another psychotic. How funny does he find that?

A less contentious thought for the day

Going to church doesn't make you a Christian anymore than standing in a garage makes you a car

Some people are like a Slinky.....not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.

I hear Joel.

And we're reaching that age... the age where things catch up with you in a non romantic way. And let me tell you, it's happening younger and younger.

I've sat by two bedsides (one friend one relative) as they died of lung cancer in the last couple months. And let me tell you, they were neither old nor ready. And there was nothing glamorous or romantic about it. It happened fast for both - death within 2-3 months of the diagnosis. And within that time I watched them each turn into emaciated frames that looked more alien then human.

Each leaving behind friends and family that thought they'd have whole decades longer to spend with them...

I hear Joel, too. Or rather, I didn't need to hear Joel in the first place. I have a similar tale to tell. The Clement Freud line is a quip. Surely nobody believes he really meant it. Or that I did.

Anyway, God bless all. Sincerely.

I didn't mean to sound reactionary if I did. I just worry about people.

But bring on the quips.

Let me testify: I don't smoke, drink, or do any legal/illegal drugs - I never have, not to any meaningful, measureable degree.

And life ain't ANY friggin' better....

The truth as ever, lies somewhere inbetween.

Drink a bit, smoke a bit, take a bit...Just keep it in check.

It's your life after all.

A hundred years from now, none of the opinions you've expressed above will mean shit to you.

Should I keep fit so other people can know me longer? Why? What were any of you going to say to me that made a difference to anything?

Should I keep fit so I can know my self longer?

Was I about to say anything to myself that would make any difference to anything?

Logically it doesn't matter when you die.

Unless you've got something to tell me?

Of course, the longer you love the longer you MIGHT have something earth shattering to say.

But the effect of that will only ever bounce around in the bubble of finite logic and never escape into infinity. In fact, maybe it will only be able to burst the bubble and kill us all.

Which is the thought I've been striving for...for so long.

A typo gives Albie his most powerful statement ever.

Welcome back Donald.

"Logically it doesn't matter when you die."

By logically, Albie, do you mean objectively? If so, it depends on whose interests are taken into account. From the point of view of a purple gas inhabiting a star nebula in another galaxy, it means zilch. From the point of view of those on this planet who would find you, dispose of your possessions, attend your funeral, write your obituary and remember you, it might matter quite a bit. Our irrelevance to the cosmos is the context of our relevance to each other.

It could of course have been a freudian slip, you know - one of those things where you say one thing but you mean a mother.

Objectively? dunno. There's no such thing in the finite. Any way you matter to someone is finite. Your very use is finite. There's nothing infinite about us. Unless you break into the infinite then nothing matters.

Here's today's thought. I'm surrounded by chavs. I've been put on NEW DEAL and am surrounded BY CHAVS! And it goes on for a week! Before I get a work placement, which will be a blessed relief from the evil chavs I'm surrounded by all day!

I'm in hell!!!!!!!!

Women have the last word in any argument. Anything you say after that is the start of a new argument.

Weber, are you stuck in a bad 1970s comedy sketch show, like some weird variation of Life on Mars?
