Greetings to my friend around the glob, from England to NZ. This week, did you know that *some* writer are now being required to produce *two* novels a year, regardless of whether they're good or not? It irritates me, as you'll see here: http://tbdeluxe.blogspot.com/2012/05/strong-opinion.html Thanks as always for reading! Thomas |

Interesting blog, Thomas - all seems a bit strange as although books are indeed available 24 hours a day, I don't think anyone's actually reading any faster... |

I'm with you, Thomas! A book or a shorter story has to take as long as it takes to write. Still, let's remember Leo Brett, Bron Fane, Robert Lionel Fanhope, Mel Jay, Marston Johns, Victor La Salle, Oben Lerteth, Robert Lionel, John E. Muller, Elton T. Neef(e), Phil Nobel, Peter O'Flinn, Peter O'Flynn, John Raymond, Lionel Roberts, Rene Rolant, Deutero Spartacus, Trebor Thorpe, Pel Torro and Karl Ziegfreid... |

Thanks everyone! Ramsey . . . wow, not a one of those names I know. No, Mick, no one is reading faster and I'm a slow reader to start with, moving my lips and all . . . . |

Relatively few professional writers earn a minimum wage from writing alone – not only do they nearly always need to boost their income with other jobs, their rate per hour for those jobs is usually higher than their earning rate from writing. You can write two novels every year on a contract with a commercial publisher and earn £3,000 for each – is that a living? A well-known author of children's fiction said recently that thanks to the transition to e-books, he now has more readers and less income (in real terms) per book than at any previous time in his thirty-year career. |

Ramsey – even Lionel gave up writing eventually in order to find the Holy Grail in Wales for Channel 4. Though his motives may have been spiritual rather than financial. |

Mind you, he has been on Radio 4 Extra recently, introducing their sf and fantasy hour. |

No, I haven't heard of Lionel Fanthorpe, Ramsey! I guess that's what living in the grim backwater of the San Francisco Bay Area does to a guy. What do you recommend? |

Nothing, Thomas, nothing! I wish Badger Books were still around, because I'm really good at writing bad novels in a week. It's writing good novels that gives me trouble. |
