On the one hand winding up low-paid workers doing a horrible job could be considered cruel. On the other, it was probably the most interesting thing that happened to him that day.

That's hilarious! Yes, I guess we should feel sorry for the tele-marketers ... but I'm afraid they wind me up so much with their nuisance calls I just can't find it in my heart to feel any sympathy for them.

I don't feel sorry for them, no. Just the other day I told one several times "This number is registered with the Telephone Preference Service" as indeed it is. This threw him from his script. He ended up accusing me of wasting his time and told me (I'm not inventing this) to go away and ring off. Fuck him and the rest of his species of turd. I didn't ask him or any of them to bother me, and if they persist in doing so, it's open season. I have a lot of patience - too much of it - but when it peters out, it's all gone.

I think the people who organize and run these organizations deserve the blame, not so much the workers.

"I think the people who organize and run these organizations deserve the blame, not so much the workers."

That's very true, Proto. Fair point!

I can cope with them ringing me though, but what annoys me is when they ring my 89 year old father in the middle of the night making him struggle to get out of bed in a hurry in case it's something urgent. We're registered with the TPS too, as is my dad, but it doesn't stop them. They just flout the law regardless as they know TPS doesn't have any "teeth".

Also, they use overseas call centres to get outside the legal remit of TPS. Employing people with limited grasp of English to read crappy sales pitches over crackling intercontinental lines. The wages for these non-jobs are as pitiful as in the mines on Yuggoth, and the working conditions not much better. But that doesn't mean you have any duty to accept the call. My usual response is to hang up immediately, without speaking. Where you have someone more pushy and confident, an answer a friend of mine used effectively is: "Tell you what, give me your home phone number and I'll call you when you're having your dinner."

The Lovecraftian response is nice though, and the supervisor invention makes it all worthwhile. I wonder: did he think 'Oh, another of those' or was he just a tiny bit panicked?

Actually, for a glimpse of globalised sweatshop labour extended through the solar system, read Ramsey's 'The Mine on Yuggoth'. Then imagine Richard Branson rubbing his hands (if hands they are) and saying: "The MINE on Yuggoth!"

Got a call from a Jehovah's witness the other day. "I want to tell you about God." Truth be told, he was polite in his way, but I wonder where he got my number. AND surname.

I always say: "Can you call back in ten minutes? I've just got to mop up all this blood."

Nobody has ever rung back.
