By gum, that's one spooky, spooky film...
This weekend I have had the absolute pleasure of watching Dreyer's acknowledged masterpiece and the Russian film VIY. Both of these are scarier than most recent horror films I can think of. |

The new Criterion edition of VAMPYR is wonderful. Is that the one you have, Gary?
I love VIY - I've been introducing it to as many people as possible over the last six years or so. I heard there's a new version (also Russian). Gogol's original novella was also the inspiration for Bava's BLACK SUNDAY. |

It's the nee restoration, Huw. A screener, without a case, so I'm not sure if it's Criterion.
I bought VIY on your recommendation, mate - thanks for that! It's a wonderful film. |

Viy is one of my favourite short stories Huw- hands down. Never seen the film!
There is apparently also a quite recent Russian television series of Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita which I must see! |

I see there are two new versions of VAMPYR on DVD - the Criterion Region one in the US & the Eureka Region Two in the UK. For anyone who's interested here are the differences in the extras:

I just received the Criterion edition the other day, but seeing as it's one of my all-time favourite films, I'm going to get the Eureka edition as well, if only for the Del Toro commentary.
The Criterion edition is lovely, by the way. I can't afford to buy everything they release (or even half of it) but when they do something like VAMPYR (or MISHIMA, which came out a couple of weeks ago), I can't resist!
Karim, you must see the film version of VIY! It's really very good. The effects are dated but charming, and the whole film has a dreamlike, fairytale quality about it. There is a new version being filmed right now in Russia, directed by Oleg Stepchenko. According to the IMDB it'll be out some time next year. |
