A good exercise, but will take a few days to sort out exactly what I did read last year. All that wood pulp is just a blur. Cheers Terry |

In approximate sequence - and excluding a couple of plays I've read at least a hundred times each in order to memorise the damned things (and anything I didn't list on the WAYR threads - this year I have been mostly reading From Blue to Black - Joel Lane - excellent start to the year Keeping Britain Tidy - Steve Hollyman - new writer - may be worth keeping an eye out for more Life andd fate - Grossman - gave up on this turgid doorstop Blind assassin - Atwood - one of my top reads of the year Brookly Follies - Auster - the usual excellence Drop dead Gorgeous - Wayne simmons - nice simple zombie mayhem 11:23:62 - King - another pick for read of the year Dexter is Delicious - naff title aside, a worthy entry in the series. Hunters moon - Jim Butcher - will definitely be reading the rest of the series Secret Diary of Adrian Mole 13 3/4 - Townsend - as funny now as it was when I first read it 30 years ago - if not funnier Bloodwind - Charles l grant - not his best Cyberabad days - Ian MacDonald - Ok I suppose but a bit meh overall Last Light of the Sun - Guy Kay - very good indeed Embassytown - China Mieville - hard to get into but worth the effort Mandelbaum gate - Muriel Spark - gave up on this one too Some Kind of fairytale - Graham Joyce - excellent as usual Fractured - Karin Slaughter - dead easy read and good mystery story Little Star - Lindqvist - possibly my favourite of his to date another pick for book of the year Great House - Nicole Krauss - Auster wannabe without the readability. Hunger games - easy read, derivative and creaky storyline. Good for what it is and better grammatically at least than most of these teen bestsellers at the moment Under the Dome - another big King book this year and another pick for best of the year Last days - Adam Neville - not as good as the Ritual for me. Some brilliant set pieces but it lacked something. The Faceless - Simon bestwick - good and atmospheric. still not quite sure if I liked the ending though but definitely worth reading Dead island - mark Morris - readable but poorly plotted - but it is the book version of a zombie shoot-em-up game so didn't have huge hopes In Evil Hour - GG Marquez - disappointing to say the least. My definite least favourite book of the year that I actually finished Double Dexter - another cracking Dexter book. Dead Right - Peter Robinson - good fun, I'll be reading more Banks novels |

Yep, Gary! Once I got the hang of what she was doing there, it became quite a ride. I sort of tend towards her more traditional Wexford/mysteries... but I've become quite a fan of Rendell's... sadly, since reading her alone might very well take me years to get through everything. |

I'll try to remember to make a list as I proceed through 2013, as this seems like a fun exercise. Standout novels I read last year were: James Ellroy, The Black Dahlia Adam Nevill, Last Days Don Winslow, The Power of the Dog On Adam Nevill's recommendation, the first non-academic book I'll be reading in 2013 is Donald Ray Pollock's The Devil All the Time. |

I read four outstanding horror collections last year and Grant's 'The Orchard' more than held its own with Edgar Allan Poe, E.F. Benson & T.E.D. Klein. I think of all the popular horror writers whose work I adored in the late 70s/80s golden era his & Ramsey's - above even King & Straub - will probably last longest. |

I picked up a ton of Grant books in a second-hand bookshop last year. £2 a copy. Now I just have to find time to read them all. |

Lucky you! I've found his books nearly impossible to come by in the second hand shops over here. 'The Orchard' was the first I'd come across in about 20 years. I still rank 'The Nestling' (1982) as one of the finest horror novels of the 20th Century - up there with; 'The Ceremonies', 'The Exorcist', 'The Shining', 'Incarnate', 'Rosemary's Baby', 'The Haunting Of Hill House', 'Harvest Home', 'Ghost Story', etc. I can feel a Charles L. Grant splurge on Amazon coming on... once January is out of the way. |

Stevie, unless you're buying new copies (impossible for most Grant books), go for abebooks rather than Amazon. The former is a database of real second-hand book dealers who use dealer terminology fairly accurately. The latter is a rats' nest of idiots selling off their most beat-up, torn, stained and generally ruined copies and claiming they are in 'very good' condition. Having brought two second-hand paperbacks through Amazon that were described as 'very good' and found them both to be barely acceptable as reading copies (i.e. condition should have been ranked as 'poor'), I won't get fooled again. |

I use Abebooks and eBay often as well, Joel, when tracking down books I must read. Which reminds me... is there any word of the complete paperback edition of Ramsey's 'Secret Stories' coming out yet? That's next on my MBR list. |

I've only once had issues with a book I was sent through amazon - where it was described as very good but arrived with a severely bent spine and dog eared corners. I put a negative review of the vendor on the site. Within a couple of hours the vendor contacted me and refunded my money so i got the book for free. |

I've yet to have a bad experience buying on Amazon, Weber. I find the percentage ratings for their sellers are a good indication of reliability - in much the same way eBay works. |
