EL VAMPIRO (1957), Mexican production. Superior in every way! Reminds you of Corman's Poe movies, in its intricate storyline; though it lacks a charismatic Price-like protagonist, as well as a charged-with-evil Lee/Lugosi-esque villain - its only real flaws, given its dated elements ("dated"... that's really not fair...). Hammer-ish in its action and use (thematically, too) of location; it even has that backward-running-camera effect, the vampire going into his coffin, that Coppola used (did others use that?). Some Letwon echoes, some noir sensibilities... a big fun mash. Sure, there's silly inconsistencies, but so what? I was greatly impressed! Now I'm going to go Netflix the sequel, and hope it's as good.... |

Is that the one starring German Robles? There's a good write up of it in David Pirie's The Vampire Cinema if I remember rightly |

Yes, that's it. Have you seen it, John? Go get it if you haven't, it's quite good. |

This is one I've been meaning to check out for some time - it has the same actor (Abel Salazar) who starred in THE BRAINIAC and THE CURSE OF THE LLORONA ('crying woman'). |

Just saw the sequel, TOMB OF THE VAMPIRE (1958)... mmm, not nearly so good. In fact, bad. Yucky. Stinky, even. Don't bother. |
