Any comments on this writer of modern Lovecraftian fiction?

After Laird Barron's enthusiastic remarks about Shea elsewhere on the internet, I managed to pick up his collection POLYPHEMUS for a penny on Amazon. Last night I read "The Autopsy" and enjoyed it very much - it's rather disgusting, but in a good way. A nice blend of horror and SF.

I used to own the Arkham of that - thought it was good but never felt the need to re-read it, which is why it passed through Andy Richards' hands a while afterwards.

Oh, I see what you mean. Was temporarily in his possession.

I too own an Arkham POLYPHEMUS, but have yet to really read it all....

I remember I loved A QUEST FOR SIMBILIS when I was really into Vance, and was enthralled by NIFT THE LEAN (though I frankly can't remember anything about it), and got a great sugar-rush from THE COLOUR OUT OF TIME. Maybe it's time I finally put a bullet in that ss collection....

I have the Arkham POLYPHEMUS too, and, like Craig, I haven't read it all (yet). I thought 'The Autopsy' was a fine tale - I first came across it in THE COLOUR OF EVIL, I think (part of THE DARK DESCENT).

Has anyone read his FAT FACE or I, SAID THE FLY? Both are supposed to be good.

There's a new collection of his stories out from Centipede Press thats very tempting, but also quite pricey...

Here's a link to the Centipede Press edition, which looks gorgeous:http://www.centipedepress.com/autopsy.html
The Autopsy & Others by Michael Shea

Whoa, I just noticed that Laird wrote the introduction to this one - another reason to consider caving in and buying a copy. Maybe I could give it to someone for their birthday and then "borrow" it...

FAT FACE is good, and I recall enjoying his sequel (I think it was a sequel, anyhow) to THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE.

Huw:

I've met Michael and his wife Linda three or four times. We hung out at two World Fantasy conventions and the World Horror Con in San Francisco a couple of years back.

I grew up reading his work -- very much admiring him in the way I'm in awe of Ramsey and T.E.D. Klein; the giants. Anyhow, I was blown away when he asked me to write the introduction to this retrospective. Probably the highlight of my career to date.

Polyphemus is wicked good. Try The Angel of Death and Uncle Tuggs. The latter is fantastically gory, and one of the blackest comedies I've read. I grew up around guys exactly like the Tuggs-- almost pissed myself laughing (in horror)with that piece.

Thanks, Laird. I've got my copy of POLYPHEMUS off the shelf again, and am going to read the stories you recommended. I don't think I've read either of those two yet.
