I gather from his essay in the booklet to the Criterion edition of Anthony Mann's (very interesting if not wholly successful) The Furies that Robin Wood is writing a book on Michael Haneke. Meanwhile, here are some of this thoughts:

That's a very strong essay, I think. There's a wide spectrum of opinion on Haneke's 'difficulty': for some viewers, he's so difficult as to seem pointlessly obscure; for others, he's so obvious as to seem crudely didactic. I think Wood gets it about right. It's nice that he also mentions Andre Techine, whose recent film THE WITNESSES (about the early years of the AIDS epidemic in France) is really superb. He's nothing like Haneke, of course, except that both directors assume audiences want and deserve more than packaged 'entertainment'.

On a vaguely related point, I've previously found Claire Denis's work a bit opaque, but I was very taken with Beau Travail just recently.
