Anyone seen this Netflix sow? I wasn't sure at first - it felt self-conscious, obsessed with style, but after a few episodes I've come to love it. It also gained extra spooky vibes since I found it was based on a possibly true case, the Montauk Project, which sounds at once horrific and awe-inspiring.

Nice to see a new thread, Tony.

I've heard of this show but not seen it. Heard mixed reports, going from rave reviews like your own to dismissive. It sounds to me like a modern version of Joe Dante's 'Eerie, Indiana' (1991-92), a show I was initially dubious of but grew to quite love once I had worked out what they were at - nostalgic tongue-in-cheek homage to all things genre.

I had the same experience with 'American Horror Story' - we're approaching the climax to the 'Coven' season and completely enthralled. I wonder if this 'Strange Things' show may be a similar grower?

Stranger Things is a much easier watch, a real comfort blanket of a show. I couldn't get past series one of AHS. Too jarring, the characters paper thin, unlikable things.

More like 'Eerie, Indiana' then? If it's in that style I probably would enjoy it.

I agree AHS is all over the place, deliberately so, and that is part of its appeal, once you get used to what the show is and what it is not. After initial frustration I grew to really like Season 1. I loved every daft OTT moment of Season 2 and, so far, I'm finding Season 3 the best one yet, with more of a coherent narrative structure. The acting and production values are stunning. Cinematic quality.

I really liked Stranger Things, even if there's not a bit of originality in it. Too many King and Spielberg clichés to count. Even the old trick of "What is the shortest route from A to B" - fold paper and penetrate with pencil - is present. Winona Ryder got on my nerves pretty quickly, but the young actress who plays '011' (or 'El') is a find.

(continued from other thread) YES, Winona Ryder was odd, like she was playing to the gods or had forgotten how to act. But then I started to feel sorry for her, because it kind of suited her character.
El is beautiful. I'm sad I'll never live long enough to see her fully bloom, like Chloe Moretz. Such great young actresses.
But yes, Stranger Things, it kind of had an idea but didn't quite know where to take it, like its ultimate aim was to wallow in a feeling and flavour films used to have, because in a way those things were what had mattered all along.

I have the weird feeling that I will prefer the 'less good', later runs of AHS. Asylum is too rich for me, I think.
