Anyone any thoughts on these? I've been reading some reviews and have come to the conclusion they might be much better than I remember. I think my lack of fondness came from the fact I preferred the stories with supernatural overtones; seems like I have some catching up to do.

I used to love these when I was a child - Frankenstien Must be Destroyed! is a particular favourite. Frankenstien and the Monster from Hell also entertained the young Zed. Curse of Frankenstien is, of course, wonderful too.

Peter Cushing was my childhood hero.

And me!

Odd how the nadir of the series was in the middle (EVIL & WOMAN) and the films got better towards the end.

DESTROYED is excellent - seriously bleak with some marvellous dialogue (I had no idea you were medical men. We're not. Oh forgive me - I thought you knew what you were talking about)

HELL in a way is even better - like the film after the last film in a cycle, where you wonder how everything ended up and you see that the Baron is sadly banging on even though he's doomed to failure and no-one in the 'real world' even knows or cares anymore.

Him raping that woman was so sick. Worse than anything he'd ever done.

I love the series, of course. And yes, HELL is the best - it's totally decadent, it's almost a cartoon. And I am personally convinced (this is not a joke) that Mr. Burns from "The Simpsons" is based on the HELL's Dr. Frankenstein: he looks the same, he talks the same, he's insane the same... and he even arches his fingers at one point in the movie and perfectly mutters "Excellent...."

HELL is where the monster is torn apart by the inmates of an asylum, isn't it? Formulaic, but relentless. I love these films.

Again, if there's a piano anywhere at FantasyCon I'd be happy to play selections from my James Bernard music book. The opening titles from DESTROYED & HELL are particular favourites of mine

Dunno about a piano but maybe someone could bring along a stylophone?

Gosh! Not seen any of these Frankies. Excellent!
Er, will my Bill be able to watch them, or will they be a bit strong? Evil (of Frankenstein) was like nothing to him, if that's a guage.
I've noticed how rape is quite prominent in these old films and barely now. There was a hint in EVIL and I started getting uncomfortable for Billy, but I don't think he even noticed.

Oh, and the first time I saw FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED it was dubbed into Welsh and called RHAID DISTRO FRANKENSTEIN.

That would have made a fun extra on the DVD

John - Martin Scorsese cites 'Created Woman' as one of his favourite films. I liked it, too; it sent the saga off in quite new and interesting directions. A fascinating bunch of films when you think of it. In fact it'd make a great idea for a telly series, now telly is so tough.

That's right I remember that now. I don't think WOMAN is very good at all, & I fell asleep during a recent vieiwng of it, despite it being one of Terence Fisher's favourites because of the love story element (which was the bit he liked about DESTROYED as well, with Prof Brandt coming to see his wife but in another body).

I think the last two might be a bit strong for a youngster Tony - I started watching DESTROYED again last night & it's a great piece of work. I must have been about 10 when I watched that Welsh version

I too found WOMAN a weaker, less interesting Hammer Frankenstein flick, along with REVENGE. Maybe they're just dated.... And there's also HORROR, which I don't count.

No-one counts HORROR.

Do they?

They kinda do.... Ralph Bates is a poor-man's David Warner, alas. HORROR is okay, but it's nothing to rob graves and build your own reanimated corpse over....

Just watched the opening scenes to Frankenstein must Be Destroyed; Did Fisher have his David Lean head on for this? it looks beautiful! A real step up after 'Horror', which had a distinct telly feel.

Gorgeous isn't it? I watched DESTROYED last night & I think it holds up incredibly well - definitely one of the best. It was made before 'Horror', though

D'oh!
BTW what do folk think of the Frankenstein story anyhoo? I've just recently come to believe his is the most durable, flexible story ever. There isn't an ounce of it that can't be expanded on or done in some way that brings out something new. To come up with such an enduring idea would be incredible.

YES!
Buy Curse of Frankenstein from the US for about £3 and you not only get one of those lovely old Warner Bros cardboard covers but it plays on region 2 players!
Franktastic!
