Just watched this last night, and despite a few scares it left me kind of cold. Made by the chap who did Garth Marenghi it was great visually, albeit a bit static, but had so little going on it could have been cut up and rearranged and we wouldn't have noticed. Reviews say it will stick in my mind, but it hasn't.
(Why do I hate being negative about things, in case the filmmakers might be listening? Or is that just being good?)
Also watched After Life, the first episode of the new Ricky Gervais sitcim on Netflix. I'm not nuts about Gervais but this made me laugh a lot and I totally empathised with him. But do people need dead wives or children in order to be depressed all the time? I'm as depressed as the Gervais character but just because of the world in general, everything I see from day to day.

I've never heard of it, I'm afraid!

After Life was funny and sometimes moving, the best thing Gervais has done in a while, but still with problems. I don't know if the dark thing the main character does half-way through can co-exist in a programme with a DEREK-like blubbing at the end? And I don't know many wives who would always see the funny side of being woken by a bucket of water.

I sound like I'm being negative, but I did enjoy it and gobbled it all up within 24 hours.

I think all of his things have problems. I think I'm wary of him because I'm pretty militant agnostic and he's quite attacky-atheist; I think religion is good for a lot of us, and should be left alone - UNLESS it hurts others. And I'm not for attacking people *just* for crazy beliefs if no-one is harmed in that believing.

I'm reading about scepticism vs beliefs and getting worked up about the topic. James Randi vs Rupert Sheldrake. It's making me realise niceness is the thing I look for in people.

Yeah, he's a bit harsh. As you said Melvyn Bragg said "Underrated, niceness."

Like you, Proto, I enjoy "After Life" (a couple eps left), despite having massive problems with it. Gervais, imho, had an opportunity - and episode one was mostly this way - of going very dark and creating a character that was extremely difficult to like. at all times. But by ep. 2, all that was ejected, I felt - it just became another bland iteration of cranky-goes-good.

It's not that I'm seeking something NEW - new doesn't exist, really. But - and yes, as watchable as this is - it's not terribly authentic. Or, frankly, rich. And I'm only ragging on AL, really, for being the latest not-rich thing I've seen.

Candy bars are fun to eat. But are they worth speaking about, or reminiscing upon? All the entertainment complex is offering us anymore, is candy candy candy candy candy. You'll never go broke selling candy to children. But what kind of damage does a constant 24/7 diet of candy bars do to an individual, over time?...

Do you watch the Marvels, Craig? You see, I do think they are interesting, and affecting. At least a lot of them are. I think their problem is just the sheer amount of them and we stop realising the good things they do accomplish. That said, I really didn't like Ms Marvel - it was just flatly done, and the success of it really shocked me.
Yes, I thought Gervais dropped the ball, too. The thing was, we KNEW he was good deep down, and would have stuck with him through his being horrible. But....I still like lines, and various exchanges, and the other characters were nice. Like I've said on here before niceness can be a good thing in TV or film, it makes them like the snugs n old pubs. You're sort of not in the 'pub', but it's...well, nice. :/
