Doing some writing today I learned something new (at least to me); I was stuck writing a scene with a character I knew I wouldn't like, a bad character. I was totally stuck. He would be cocky, a little arrogant. But...I couldn't write him. Suddenly it dawned on me to make him sympathetic, stop him being stereotypic - what was REQUIRED of him. The answer to being stuck was to change direction.
I suppose this is obvious, but it felt new to me. And really useful - I mean, being predictable is meant to be easy, not hard!
