I remember a thing Kim Newman said, that the best horror films, the truly effective ones, are little seen ones, ones only you seem to have caught. While I'm looking forward to this I know just what he means.

Oh yes, I think horror will always be niche. If the population goes towards it, it's not horror. (Or if it IS, then we're in trouble as a society. Maybe we are, with idiotic nastiness like WALKING DEAD being top-rated TV shows.)

Open, public horror is sideshow, carnival. Horror hides.
I enjoyed Walking Dead up to a point but it lost me when the guy with the bat appeared and killed those two men. For ME it was overstepping a mark. I have the serious belief that horror is a cure for depression, or a treatment - it lets you work things out, gives you a trial run of bad situations, matches the mood you might be in. But when it goes too far it can just take you right into that state you've been trying to avoid.

That was pure sadism, and masochism. It's like when bullies do Hallowe'en: out go subtle ghost and spirits, in come loud fireworks, "practical jokes" (excused for sadism and chaos) and fear of physical violence.

Someone said horror on the page is different to horror on a screen, easier to deal with somehow. Game of Thrones, so sadistic too. It bothers me people like it so much.

Yes, I agree about GoT. And I worry what it means to use as a society that these are the most popular entertainments today, when they used to be Friends and Star Trek.

And even Star Trek is now Dark Trek. Idiotic and violent.

Actually it's not even that - it's also Dull Trek. I've stopped watching. Heck, I've been enjoying watching old Torchwood's more...

Yeah, I decided not to watch season 2 after hating season 1. Well I watched what was almost universally lauded as the best ep in season 2. I hated it.

What mistakes do you think it's making? I used to like the curly headed autisticy girl but now she's become almost a kind of avatar made up of every current Facebook trend. I just think it feels aimless. And formless.

"What mistakes do you think it's making?"

Oh, er, all of them?

It seems written by people who have little talent and less interest in Trek. They're running it like a burger franchise. It has contempt for the audience. As wobbly as it sometimes was, if you look at the depth of thought and world-building and passion put into ST:TNG, it's remarkable and give that show longevity. This has the feel of a cash grab. It's cynical and contemptuous of the audience. This all started ten years ago when it felt like Star Trek had been bought by some asset-stripping company. Now it's Generic Space Thing with "Remember this thing you recognise?" Imagine Hannibal Lector went home wearing that policeman's face and continued to live the policeman's life like that. I feel like that policeman's wife.

I miss Star Trek. We need it.

To be fair, I don't know that the writing staff have no talent, just that if they have, they haven't displayed it in this show. There's no content. It's a show that is desperately trying to be catch your attention without earning it. It jingles its keys in front of us every week but when we turn our head towards it, it has nothing to say. When your setting is The Galaxy, that can only be a failure of imagination on the part of the writers.

No, was just wondering if what you disliked matched what I did. It does feel kidnapped. I came to quite like the first Abrams but the second was a disaster. And the third...well. It was like some estranged dad trying to win over his son with a new different and more expensive toy every visit.

Picard has gone pedestrian and violent. I liked the first few but the last I saw was a mix of boring and horrible to watch. Directed by Jonathan Frakes, too, who did a fun but sort of atypical Trek film in First Contact.

Back among the old sofas again, long may they endure.

I haven't and never will watch Picard, but I'm really enjoying the exasperated reviews from people of it. Redlettermedia do some good ones. As far as I'm concerned there hasn't been any Star Trek since Enterprise ended in 2004(ish?). It's been awful stuff that only stimulates the lizard part of our brain since then.

Do you mean Star Trek (2009)? I didn't like that one. Felt like a big ignorant bully had crashed into your bedroom and started playing with all your toys without being asked. Roughly.

No, Picard. The first few episodes. They felt quite relevant. But this last ep was awful. I came to quite like the first of the last three films but the other two retro retrospoiled it. I hated the last one, which was basically the same story as the first one!

The best was to watch Picard is through Redlettermedia. I find that way I feel I've both seen it and been consoled about it at exactly the same time.

I've been watching Star Trek TNG from the start again. So varied and patchy but so bold really. Favourite episode so far was last night's, Where No One Has Gone Before. "What if time and space and thought are more connected than we realised?". I love Wesley Crusher. I think he was the main character. Such a mind expanding episode. I don't think awe has been on telly since.
Also loved that the snotty engineer from the other ship became sympathetic and Wesley got signed up as a crew. So moving and uplifting. Heck, uplifting... I need that.

Star Trek TNG great again. "Why has everything become Something or Whatever?"
God is something that is "Here and somewhere else". Not conversations you will hear in any soap.

Oh, wow. That was one of the eps that people cited as the worst. I remember enjoying it at the time. Great lines there when you lift them out of context.

I really enjoy "Sub Rosa", also widely regarded as one of the worst episodes. I like that the universe they depict is big enough to have a ghost story on a Scottish planet.

I can't understand any dismissal of such thoughtnprovoking stuff. A girl seeing her "god" and her reaction to it is just phenomenal, and the sympathetic way the moderators say Wesley has to die, and God saying "Ok, you're right" to Riker and Picard suggesting laws don't just belong in a rulebook are just jaw-dropping to me.

Got Battlestar Galactica on again. It ushered in many things we have right now I think. Even Breaking Bad in a funny kind of way.
