Me checking this place daily in the faint hope of a chat is getting me down. I'm going to try not to from now on even though it means a lot to me. I don't have any friends in the real world and one on my phone, and a few people I chat with now and then online, so you can see how much I looked forward to seeing people on here and TALKING. But it hasn't been happening, and it is not only silly but almost agonising to try and whip it back into life, so I think it's time to let it go, even though it hurts me because it's representative of lots of changes going on in other ways in the world. But who knows, it could also be me causing it - it wont be the first time I've driven people away. I seem pretty good at it.
So...goodbye, to whoever is listening, but largely to an era, a thing the kind of which I don't think we'll see again.
:-(

The place where you feel you're interacting but really you're silently in your own fish tank watching other fish swim by? Getting one word answers off people while they have full conversations with narcissists who where openly horrible to you? Endless petitions about cruelty to animals and whatever that come round again and again? Strangers from round the world shooting you down when you speak about some issue, however politely you put it?
No thanks.

I drop by here now and then and may continue to do that. I think it is what it is for now. Things ebb and flow. Though it seems you want it to be much more active than it is, Tony, rather than a place where you check in now and then and see what's been happening with people. I don't really use FB either.

I just look forward to it too much. I don't have any of what it represents in my life.

What do you think of panpsychism? Have you been hearing about it too? I have been reading about UFOs and doing artworks about them and have decided they are the modern angels. Getting moved by making the images. But I have decided that finding out whether they, or ghosts, or panpsychism or whatever exist, will not fix your life, or anyones.

I hadn't heard of panpsychism before. Not sure I understand the idea without further reading. UFOs as modern angels is an appealing idea.

Panpsychism sounds great, but if you read between the lines it kind of means we are in hell. I mean, what to eat?
Also...will seeing ufo make you happy? A ghost? If anything, I think they might remove all point from life.

They've been doing it since before they can remember I guess.
Just watched a bit of a Glee episode. I have outlived a whole bunch of them.
And did you know the guy who played Harry in Harry (Bigfoot) and the Hendersons was black? And died of Aids given to him via a blood transfusion, aged 53, about a year after that film came out?

I really want to be here more myself - it's just tedious, because of circumstances. Time is so limited, lately, I barely can keep up. And every separate "thing" in life, even if it's fairly "easy" - like logging into a BB - is still another "thing" and there's only so many "things" we can stack up in a given day, howsoever so small. Lately, my reading has been completely jettisoned - I don't read at all lately, not a word (well, not pure pleasure reading - I read for work, but that doesn't count). So you can imagine the constraints I'm under! But it's all temporary, like all things in life, and maybe I'll find more and more time to return here... I do hope so....

But I agree, FB isn't the place. Here, for one - there's NO CONTROLLING FORCES - you actually FEEL alone, free, not under scrutiny. This I'm sure is why the BB model was attacked and undermined and cast into the outer darkness - because the powers-that-be cannot easily control here, gather data, form public opinion, make money off you. The real way to extricate ourselves from the evil masters is to return to BBs - not to get lured in by Twitter knock-offs, just trying to cash in another way, as one example. Fully EXTRACT ourselves.

Notice how "bulletin boards" subtly, over the years, has taken on malicious and sinister connotations? It's not been overt - it's been quietly, secretly - whenever you hear about BBs in the news, and that's rare, it's inevitably associated with something bad - a white supremecist BB, a 4-CHAN BB, a dark web BB, etc.

Yes... "things". Like barnacles stuck on our hull, slowing our passage. (I was hoping for a nautical metaphor but afraid that might sound like a medical one.) Also, our brains slow down.

I hear that people are suspicious of those who don't have Facebook profiles now.

Barnacles are on my mind (figuratively, I hope) because I've gotten into films about sailing ships. I'm right on target for middle age. I only know of three of them (well, three relatively modern ones): WHITE SQUALL, THE BOUNTY and MASTER AND COMMANDER.

I predict my next passion will be jumble sales.

Yes! That's why I was missing this place, there's no sense of coercion (not outside of me, anyway!), or like you said Craig, of being watched. FB has whistles and bells that keep you scrolling, but lately a lot of it has been depressing, all petitions and depressing news related stuff. It feels like going out for a walk and being bombarded by chuggers.
Today a friend I have talked with a lot of instagram just up and left, deleted her accounts. We had stuff in common and have talked for over a year. But we've not talked as much lately, drifted, but today she sent me a message with her email address and before I could note it down has gone, taking the messages with her. I'll never see or talk with her again. One of the reasons she said she had left was because instagram was eating up her time and energy for little or no feedback or interest. She wanted to do work she could touch and feel and be seen in the real world. Her words have sunk in. I am realising I live largely only in cyberspace. The other day a page came up by accident telling me I spent about 8 hours a day on instagram. It was a real wake up moment. I could produce a painting in that time, write a short story...GO somewhere and back.
Shit. This is really hitting home.
But yes, I have heard people saying it's odd not to be on fb, that in not doing so you are being creepily invisible. This actually highlights to me why NOT to be on it.

I love boat films, too. You might like Perfect Storm. I went through a phase of building model galleons the other year, really got into them. Best ship thing ever might be the Hornblower series. So immersive and transporting, full of fascinating detail. It feels like a massive satisfying meal watching one.

The thing is, people seem to know social media is bad for them and society, but are addicted. To map it onto the war on smoking, we're still in the late 1970s.

Perhaps we need the equivalent of no smoking signage for social media. Can someone design one? Not sure how you'd distribute it though...

Thanks for the tip, I'll check out PERFECT STORM. It's more the old tall ships, though. WHITE SQUALL I found surprisingly affecting in places. During lockdown that world of islands and travel and '60s style seemed like a heaven.

I just posted a picture of a deserted York station on instagram, my first photo in two days, the longest time off it I can remember since joining it. I have felt lighter. I am not sure I will go back. I had people on there I spoke to about quite deep things, but I am horrified to think I might not miss them. The empty trains and stations reminded me of life yesterday. The trains and stations were largely empty because of covid and I have never more enjoyed a journey so much. It felt like my being away from the net. York, too, was quiet, and I had one of the nicest times there I've ever had.

Imagine Anthony Hopkins was a serial killer in real life. You could only get actors in films who had done things connected to the parts. Films would feel quite vivid, wouldn't they? I wonder what it would be like to see an actor who had really killed playing someone normal.
I once told my son a caveman in At The Earth's Core was Fred West who had pursued an acting career in the seventies. The likeness was so close I started to believe it, and to oddly feel a soft spot for West, who, had his acting career taken off, might not have gone on to kill. See? I'm feeling sad for him even as I write.

Not exactly a boat film, but Cast Away with Tom Hanks is excellent.
I also watched another Zemekis film the other week, Contact. It's become a favourite. I think Jodie Foster gives maybe the best performance in film history in it. Her face when she goes across the universe has precisely the look we would expect it to have.

I look forward to it, Tony. :-)

I have been:
a) Getting married
b) Moving to Liverpool
c) Moving to Wallasey (now live about a mile from the landlord!)
d) Having anxiety attacks
e) Suffering the odd depressive episode
f) Wasting far, far too much time on Facebook (which may or may not be linked to d) and e) above)
g) Getting an agent
h) Losing an agent
i) Looking for a new agent
j) Writing.

:-)

As you can see, it's been a mixed bag, but more good than bad.

How are you?

Not much. Going abroad a couple of times (Barcelona was like utopia), though listening to the locals it was like a northern Ireland was brewing). Kids grown up and not wanting much to do with us.
Haven't written in ages. I just can't seem to concentrate.
I seem to keep falling out with people. I went off FB too, because I just seem unable to gel with anyone. I refriended people from here but realised we had no real interest in one another. I know Caroline still because actually engages in conversation, something not that common!
I have had depression and anxiety stuff a lot too. But it comes and goes, you almost get used to it.
I sort of drifted away from horror (or rather the whole of society started using it!) and lately have been looking into ufos and things, and the nature of reality. I had a huge day that felt like a spiritual awakening last week, was incredible and beautiful, i thought my life had fallen into shape, but it's faded - I can't forgive people or stop disliking or distrusting them. In short I felt I had the nature of reality understood, just not living through it. :-(
This place has been lovely, maybe especially when deserted. Proto and Craig pop up now and then but I was getting down a bit because like you I was checking every day, whereas for them it was weekly or monthly, and conversations often just died...I think because I might be a bit clingy and needy.

I just have a loose hold on this place as I've a lot of things to do, so it's not to do with anything you're doing.

I too have moved away from horror, but it seems that as I did society seems to have adopted it (and geek culture). The "normal people" are now the outsiders. I do hope that doesn't mean society as a whole is having problems.

I was trying to dilute the depressing end of this thread, with some banality that would banish the darkness.

Specifically: Shiba Inu is a crypto-currency (more accurately, in the common parlance: a "shit coin") that was trying to compete with Dogecoin. In the wake of the recent bloodbath, however, Shiba Inu took a gigantic hit, so shouting "Shiba Inu!" weirdly, today, has the counter-effect of more likely, to those who know, creating MORE depression. Perhaps this thread is too powerfully dark... it might need an exorcism....

That said, I struggle with books now, and movies. Since the days this was busy people seem to have lost the knack of filmmaking.

Hi Christopher! I watched a couple of his videos and agreed with a lot of what he said, but the drunken voice kept making me think he was joking! Presiding make him feel friendly? I can't remember. Have you stopped going to the cinema? Or still going? Favourite film of the year was Quiet Place 2... It was so sad seeing the big poster up for the whole year, more really, but then great to find the film much more relevant than it ever could have intended.

Let's not end this on despair... let's end this on a a dirty joke:

The gynecologist looked up from the woman he was examining, with a frown. "What is it, Doctor?" she asked. "I'm sorry to tell you this... but I'm afraid you're going to have to stop masturbating." "But why?!" she asked. "Because otherwise I can't examine you."
