The guys that run mastermind are a load of cheating bastards. I got on the show recently and was doing really well. I got a record score of 28 points in my specialist subject - "Questions with the answer 'yes'". Then they cheated me in the general knowledge round. A pattern started to form with the questions "What is it called in football when you kick the ball to another member of your team?" "complete the name of this rad that runs between Glossop and Sheffield - The snake ....?" Give a four letter word to describe a path or road through a mountain range. What word is spelt by the phonetic alphabet letters Papa Alpha Sierra Sierra? etc By the end of the general knowledge I had 28 points and 19 passes. Cheating sods. | ||

You mean you start running around in high-speed, chasing nurses and slapping little bald guys on the head? ;-) For what it's worth, I haven't heard that Mastermind joke - it was pretty funny! Is Mastermind still going? I used to watch it as a kid, but lost track when I left the UK (and Germany, where it was shown sometimes). I saw this ludicrous American TV show the other day - it's called "Are you smarter than a 5th Grader?" or something, and the questions are ridiculously easy. They had questions like: "which is smallest - one-third, one-half, or one-quarter?" "which country does the River Ganges flow through in Asia?" "on which continent is the Gobi desert be found?" "which country was Ivan the Terrible from?" I swear to God, the contestants were straining over these questions and got most of them wrong! The reward was something like a million dollars! Un-fucking-believable... we could all be millionaires if we were elligible for that show. | ||

Huw, John Humphries hosts MASTERMIND now. Alas, Magnus Magnusson passed away the other year. But the show's still going and hasn't been dumbed down, though the "I've started so I'll finish" line doesn't get used, I believe. Rentaghost and Worzel Gummidge are apparently to be remade . . . | ||

Thanks, Mark - I'm glad to hear MASTERMIND is still going strong. I was sad to hear of Magnus Magnusson's death. He was a great translator, as well as a charismatic presenter. I'll miss the line "I've started so I'll finish." |
