Just watched this with one of my kids and two friends of his on Saturday night in a hostel in the middle of nowhere, the middle of the night on a porty dvd player. They loved it. I've not seen it for about twenty odd years, and never thought much to it, but how fab it seems now; beautiful clours, especially in that autumn wood, and thrilling as well as scary; the scene with the puppy coming to life was so exciting, so beautifully scored. I used to dislike this for the somewhat 2d monster, a flat character after Karloff, but I was wrong; Lee's performance is quite subtle, and quite touching, and he isn't totally monstrous. Also, I discovered a horrible, not-really-alluded-to touch; I think Frank put the brain of his maid, his mistress, into the monster. The funny thing is my young son felt the same; 'The monster hid it's face in shame this time', he said. A great, disturbing film. Also - got this from the US for £3, shrink wrapped. It said it was region one ut plays on ordinary, region 2 machines. A total treat (and I love old Warner Bros covers - they feel like books). |

Cushing, also, is good in that 1st film. And I always felt he made a dashing Van Helsing. |
