Not the Grave Jones record, but me and Michelle. We're heading off to Guernsey tomorrow, assuming the planes are working again. This is one island I've not been to before, so I'm looking forward to it. The virtual tour is worth a look if you've broadband:

We're flying Origney, one of whose pilots recently reported a giant UFO near the island:

Yikes!

Cheers, mate. She says hi and hope you and your M are well, hopes we can come see you on the craggy Yarksheer coast some time.

Do you get bits or scraps there, Gary? I remember we had a discussion about it with the women serving us in Huddersfield, how it differed in Bradford. Important stuff.

I always ask for scraps, but I'm not sure what the natives call them.

You ask for a scrap where I grew up, you'd get a smack in the teeth. Funny old world.

Excellent Mark - I love Guernsey - a lot more laid back than Jersey and a lot less touristy...

Anywhere you'd recommend, Mick? We're there for just under two weeks. I'm looking forward to some downtime, to be honest. A stroll along a few beaches and cliff tops will do me. I don't know if there's anything like "le Huggy Bear" on Jersey on Guernsey, but I found it very moving -- more so than the German hospital/military tunnels, probably because of the scale.

By the way, Mick. I finally got around to finishing Robert Harris's THE GHOST recently. First of his I'd tried. Struck me as a traditional "master storyteller" type of novel, which is usually code for "can't write for toffee". But I found I quite enjoyed its old fashioned nuts and bolts storytelling. No linguistic flare, just a rattling ole tale. It's an underrated artform, so good luck to him -- even if I suspect he wears a cravat when he writes (and with no irony). The story was a sly one, nicely arch, and compelling in a Jack Higgins political thriller way. Funny role for Cherie Blair in it, and her sex scene isn't as horrific as you'd fear it to be . . .

Thought you might be looking for a collaborator...

Yup.

It was a thinkly disguised Cherie Blair in the book, but her all the same.

By the way, the "bit" comment made me laugh earlier. Very amusing, sir!

Nah, it's a distraction visit, Joel. Sorry. I'll take some pictures, see if the kindly Mister Mick will post them for us later.

Mark - I'd certainly recommend the underground hospital on Guernsey, simply because unlike the one on Jersey, it's not been redecorated, and it still has stuff that was left there in the war, plus the walls are still bare, with water running down them, and it gives you a much better feeling for the tunnels than the clean, white one on Jersey does.
St Peter Port is a nice town, quite old-fashioned but mostly in a good way.

I liked those newscasters on the clip above - much more pleasant to look and and listen to then any of the ones we have here...

That poor pilot really seemed shaken up.

Hey, you take care, Huw.

And don't worry about Gary -- he likes dark, confined spaces, and the water only rises to the ceiling after really heavy rain. The five-day forecast is good. I'm away two weeks, though . . ..

Can't promise any TV presenters, A, but we'll send you some postcards, as we did from neighbouring Jersey the other year.

Well, we're back. And if I can figure out the piccies, I'll try post a few. Had a lovely time, enjoyed the witchy beauty and Indian Summer striking Guernsey, popped over to Herm Island (passing the Barclay Brothers' private island on the way) when it was deserted and enjoyed empty beaches and sun the like of which I've only ever sen in a James Bond movie. Very lovely time indeed.

All a bit flat when you come back to earth, though, isn't it? And I've just learned a neighbour of mine has died unexpectedly . . .

Sigh . . .
