Here's a quick plea - does anyone know any other outlets that stock the 'Best Buy Exclusive' DVDs and happen to ship to the UK? (As Best Buy bloody doesn't).

Why? Because Warners are releasing The Shuttered Room, Chamber of Horrors and most importantly It! the 1966 Goldstar horror picture about the golem destroying Hammersmith Bridge but not before he kidnaps lovely Jill Haworth for Roddy McDowall who keeps his mummified mother in bed upstairs.

And I have to see it.

I've always wanted to see that golem film again (it was on TV when I was very youbg, but I kept falling asleep and missing parts), Lord P...let me know if you find an outlet.

Where do you get all this info?

Ah, THE SHUTTERED ROOM - there's one I haven't seen. With the unequalable Oliver Reed.

I think these folk (who I've found very reliable) may, John. Ask them if they have the titles.

THE SHUTTERED ROOM is pants though. It's based on a Lovecraft/Derleth 'collaboration' but has all the weird stuff taken out. It sells as a horror film but is not a horror film in any way, shape or form, and is approximately as Lovecraftian as CARRY ON CLEO.

Yeah, but it has Oliver Reed in mad mode. In a vest. It doesn't get more iconic than that... :-)

Speaking of Reed: after some googling and youtubing (does the verb even exist?) I ended up with a six-part documentary on the making of THE DEVILS, another one I've never seen. I don't think I was aware of the controversy when it came out - still in a catholic school in a (then) nice country and all that . . . The bit about the rape of Christ looks great, I can see why it stirred things up. It'd probably stir things up today.

Oh my JHC, Hubert - THE DEVILS is awesome! You simply must find it and see it! Top priority! Forget the controversial stuff, it's just a delicious, well-wrought, texture-rich movie. At least from what I remember... hell, I've gotta go out and see this one again myself!...

Thanks everyone. Zed - as far as I was aware IT! had never been shown on UK telly so you're lucky to have even seen a bit in 'sleep' mode. The first five minutes of THE SHUTTERED ROOM scared me silly as a little 'un but the rest is rubbish.

Can't find them on DiabolikDVD either & they're meant to be out in 2 weeks (they're double bills - IT!/THE SHUTTERED ROOM and CHAMBER OF HORRORS/BRIDES OF FU MANCHU. Bloody Best Buy exclusives

Craig - THE DEVILS is superb. Apparently according to producer Robert H Solo it's only just gone into profit.

I loathed The Devils possibly even more than most of Russell's stuff. He almost makes Tony Richardson seem worthwhile.

Ha! I was bored by Devils even though it had all these shocking things going on. Russell was best on telly, his sibelius stuff etc, but Women in Love was good, and Whore had it's moments, and Crimes of Passion was fun, but...his films can sort of feel like raunchy Children's Film Foundation films, like an amatuerish person made memorable because they were rude.

RC, obviously you don't like Russell!

He is a 'love him or hate him character' but I do get off on his films, But that said, you gotta be in the mood. I watched Savage Messiah t'other night and had to turn it off...just couldn't get on with it despite the fact I had enjoyed it before.

I love The Devils, Whore, (anything with Theresa Russelll...hmm.) Women In Love, Not bothered by Tommy...

A guilty pleasure. I love Lair Of The White Worm. Its toss. Magnificent toss.

John - I've read that the previous Best Buy DVD's, released about 2 months ago are been shipped to all stores when the new titles are released. Which could mean that in 2 months time the same could happen to these films...

Is The Shuttered Room the one where Ollie returns as an adult to his childhood home? I remember a part with a child in a cot, and a dollhouse...
It must be nearly 30 years since I last saw it, if so.

I vaguely remember Ollie being a thuggish type in this film too. He said one line that always cracked me up, although I can't recall it precisely right now. Something about "boot leather" (I think he was trying to put a city-type in his place by showing how rugged he was).

I really hope these films will be easy enough to find when they're released. I've not seen It, but it sounds good. I'm a sucker for anything golemy...

There was once a scenario for the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game called On the Trail of the Loathsome Slime. Stan & Ollie could have fought the Cthulhu Mythos. Bertie Wooster might've gotten into a deuced-rotten scrape with it, too.

Following on from the mention of Theresa Russell above, it was only when I re-watched Bad Timing recently that I realised what a good actress she could be. One of my favourite scenes in all of Roeg's work is Russell and Denholm Elliot parting ways at a checkpoint. The actors manage to communicate the heft of an entire relationship that we haven't seen: tenderness, regret and the inevitability of the situation in which they find themselves. Russell's magnificent throughout the film, but her performance is so good, it becomes transparent. I suspect this is true of a lot of actors. Who else am I overlooking?

Lord P, did you find a copy of The Shuttered Room/It yet? I'm hoping mine will arrive today. I am hoping to spend tonight watching Oliver Reed being a campy thug and Hammersmith Bridge being menaced by a golem...

A few other goodies have been released recently: The Skull, The Picture of Dorian Grey, and a 2-disc, four-film set that includes the Hammer films Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, The Two Faces of Dr, Jekyll, Scream of Fear and The Gorgon.

Do you know if they've improved things this time around, John? The first series was slated as no cleaning up was performed and I think the episodes were trimmed.
Oh, and don't get too down, but it's sixty stories over 22 episodes rather than 60 eps, unfortunately.

I recall seeing a fair few episodes in the 'seventies. As ever with such things, there was great variation, but there were some goodies in there.
Reading through the info on the second series DVD release, it does sound as if some more thought has gone into things this time around.
