I've just seen this - heard of it, but knew nothing about it, and refused to read about it before watching. I was quite impressed. A 70's relic, saturated with its sensibilities (I wonder if Fulci didn't steal the atmosphere for his The House By The Cemetery...?) If you don't know the story, it takes you on quite an eerie, unsettling, and unexpected ride; very Campbellian too, almost rivalling The Nameless in that regard. I've read that the script was originally a comedy! Anyway, a good one.

This is one of my favourite low-key horror films. I watch it every couple of years and it still stands up well, I think. There are several genuinely creepy scenes, and the whole thing sustains a weird atmosphere very successfully. People making horror films today could learn a lot by watching films such as this one. A lot of movies these days resemble music videos or video games rather than actual films. They don't seem to understand that a successful horror film needs room to breathe and build character and atmosphere; they are way too obsessed with filling every minute with as many cheap 'jolt' scenes as possible.

I'd say there will eventually be a backlash against this, HUW, but... I think the audience may be so far gone, ravaged by these music videos and video games, that it will only get worse and worse and worse.... Maybe it will require a gradual weaning rather than a total reversal, much in the manner of THE ORPHANAGE. Or THE HAPPENING... if that had been a better film....
