I shared an elevator with Mike Leigh in New York in January; he was staying at the Algonquin too, on a lower floor than us, and I was chatting with Christopher Frayling when the door opened on the 8th floor and a short grey-haired man with a beard got on. I thought he looked familiar; he and Christopher obviously knew each other and began talking, and when Christopher called him Mike and said 'You're here for your play' I thought 'Yes, it's Mike Leigh!' When we all got out in the lobby I asked Christopher if it was indeed Mike Leigh, and when he said yes I asked if he thought Leigh would mind if I just went and said hi. He said no, he wouldn't, so I caught up with him outside the Algonquin and we chatted for a moment; he seemed a bit shy, but pleased to have someone come up and express admiration for his work.

Love to go to a Q and A session with him. Are you going, Allyson? If so, report back!

If you like him Weber - this would be quite close for you.

I wish I could Barbara - he was born in Salford, where my family have lived for a few hundred years...can't get over from Yorkshire at the moment. Pity.
