Just picked this up from the library. Quite a few will have read Slaughterhouse Five but has anyone read his short stories written at the end of the golden age of magazine fiction pre -1953 before telly?

In his intro Vonnegut said he sold about four stories a week to American magazines and could live quite comfortably on it.

I am a Vonnegut-ophile. But even I have to admit that BAGOMBO isn't his best: it's all the minor stuff, stuff even he forgot or deliberately left out of earlier anthologies, that someone else gathered together for publication. It's hardly the best, or even a good, introduction to Vonnegut. (Almost as bad as his first novel is an intro, PLAYER PIANO - though it's fine to get into, later on.)

One of my favorite novels from anyone, ever, is THE SIRENS OF TITAN. MOTHER NIGHT and CAT'S CRADLE are sheer masterpieces. And of course, SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE (which is much richer, if the other novels have been read first). Read his non-fiction too, PALM SUNDAY and the GANFALOONS one especially.

Ww. How times have changed.

Vonnegut is another author I really should read. Thanks for those recommendations, Craig.

All I've read is THE SIRENS OF TITAN but that's hilarious

Read SLAUGHTERHOUSE 5 a long time ago and enjoyed it, so tried various other things that weren't, frankly, my cup of tea. In interviews Vonnegut invariably comes across as someone who's lost his marbles.
