Last night I watched Haneke's remake of his own film. When I first heard about this I was rather puzzled as to why he was doing it, but after watching the film I can now see his reasoning.

I didn't expect the film to work as an American remake, but oh my it did. The original is one of the most harrowing (and brilliant) things I've ever seen, and this one is almost as disturbing. Even my familiarity with the material didn't detract from what was a truly mesmerising experience. The leads (particularly the always-excellent Watts) were great, and the film remains surisingly relevant. I also realised that the recent THE STRANGERS is actually another loose remake of Haneke's original rather than a remake of the French film ILS.

God, I love Haneke. Love, love, love him. For all his didacticism, occasional lack of subtlety, and single-minded insistence on annoying some audiences, the man is just a brilliant filmmaker.

I'll have to get hold of this with my birfday money then.

I've been tempted but always managed to resist.
