Finally got round to seeing this at the weekend and loved it. Once again I didn't see the twist coming at the end. I know these films aren't great works of art but they're good fun movies that take a jaded cynic like me by surprise at the end every time. I'm looking forward to Saw V this weekend now. |

Me three! They got me in the first one, and for each one afterwards, I sat down and said... okay, you f*ckers are NOT getting me this time... and each time, they totally threw me, and (unlike the overrated M. Night, and others) satisfyingly. I hope SAW V lives up to that high bar. Or leaps those standards. Whatever the metaphor is.... |

I agree that these movies are much better than M Night Shyamalan's efforts at twisting expectations. Like Craig I left each of the Saw movies with a huge 'They got me' smile on my face. I'll be very interested to see how Saw V finishes. |

Dear me): If a SAW movie can draw such a thing as admiration, then please do not bemoan the state of horror movies ever again I partly agree with the Shyamalan comment, though in my humble opinion I think his only problem is he's trying too hard. Craig...just when I was beginning to respect your judgement. Cue the DD critical barrage. |

I'm with Weber and Lord P regarding the SAW movies - great fun. Utter trash, but enjoyable trash. |

But the HOSTEL films are even better... :-) |

Zed - Sorry, mate, I thought you hated SAW III? But, strangely I thought Hostel was great. With Hostel I thought it was classier, gorier, sure, but well directed. With the SAW movies it's gimmicky, inclined toward satisfying pubescent boys needs for Fangoria style punishments. Period. With Hostel my opinion is that it was less about the age bracket, and more about the nightmarish horror. Admittedly, SAW does run with its plots, while Hostel Part 2 was simply banal in its senselessness. A shit sequel alround. |

But, as has been mentioned, they all have a major twist to the tale. I can't think of any other series of movies that's managed to catch me out on 4 films in a row. For that alone they're worth watching. |

Weber - Fair enough, mate. I'm not adverse to having a good time with such movies, but I hear all too often about 'the state of things in horror movies'. Just a reminder. Shymalan may irk some people, DD may be over-rated (I think not), but at least they try. SAW movies are nothing more than Friday 13th movies; the cycle once again repeated as Hollywood squeezes a few more droplets from the cash cow tit. Sigh. |

I simply found the ending of SAW III confusing. The rest of the film was a blast. HOSTEL 2 is superb - almost as good as the first one. Better, in parts. I've seen it twice now and enjoyed it even more on the second viewing. |

Gosh Zed - I think HOSTEL 2 is awful, and that was merely confirmed for me on a second viewing of both films. I don't think the SAW films are state of the art, but I think they exhibit far more creativity and humour than the utterly worthless Friday the 13th series. |

HOSTEL 2 is a winner for me because it focuses on those two American chaps getting ready to make their kills (and they have to be American, for the whole thing to work). The whole process of them selecting their victims, getting the tattoos, and the tension between the two makes for compulsive viewing. I thought the first half of the film was quite masterful, and better than the first film; although it does sink to the level of hokum near the end. I don't think the SAW films are state of the art, but I think they exhibit far more creativity and humour than the utterly worthless Friday the 13th series. Agreed, sir. |

I think I might have forgiven HOSTEL 2 if they'd dragged that girl away at the end anyway. But the 2 American guys subplot didn't work for me for some reason. Don't know why. Oh and I forgot - Friday the 13th Part VI has some funny bits but not enough to make me watch it again. |

See SAW again, Frank - and when your done going up and down a few times, watch the movie SAW again. It's quite intelligent, and it takes all the conventions of the slasher horror genre, and twists them around: it delivers them on a plate to those who want the old-school elements, and it delivers them in a new recipe for those who want something different. That each film, like a master magician, can throw a veteran twist-seeker like myself - even when I'm sitting there LOOKING for them eagerly - and not throw me in a stupid, brain-dead way, but smartly, satisfyingly, and story-integrally - that's damn good film-making alone. So far, these and the FINAL DESTINATION films (though those are not quite as good as the SAWs) are the finest of this particular, oh... teenage popcorn drive-in horror films genre, I'll call it, of the 21st Century. |
