I always read and appreciate your real-time reviews after reading the books so will do as soon as I've finished Steve's collection : >). I bought all the Ash Tree collections that were launched at WHC because I respect and admire the work of all the authors. And I hope that you'll be doing a real-time review on the four volumes of Lisa Tuttle's work when they come out from ATP, too : > ). | ||

I hasten to add that I bought from Atomic Fez, Screaming Dreams and other small presses who promote so much talent...I just don't have the money to get to all....the authors I've read and wish to read more of are Reggie Oliver, Quentin Crisp (both who I've long admired)...and too many to list here. | ||

Quentin's work is truly great as I hope I showed in my real-time review of one of his books (All Gods Angels, Beware!). But greatness comes in various forms and I suggest the 'greatnesses' of the respective works of, say, Quentin, Reggie, Joel, Ramsey and Mark S are different from each other and literally incomparable, albeit those works are generated by the single Jungian (un)consciousness that taps into us all. | ||

I've finished this review now. The sense of evil at the end of 'The First Time' is the strongest I think I have ever felt in any fiction. It was a very significant experience reading the whole of this particular story this afternoon. | ||

Excellent, thoughtful, and comprehensive review, Des. Glad you liked the collection so much. It's one that, I think, repays re-reading, as there are layers and details which might be missed first time round. | ||

Thanks, Steve. I might do that. Incodentally, a rhetorical question .... isn't there a metaphor (in hindsight) within 'The First Time', e.g. with Labour's active approach to (or passive reception of) Liberal's overture for coalition in interface with a greater evil?.... |
