Joel - I have a confession to make - after forcing you to think of some jazz I should try out, and having you think through a haze of sunday morning-after-the-winning-an-award-celebratory-night-before, I got home and couldn't then find the list you gave me. I do recall the following:- Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (which I already have on vinyl no less) plus possibly Sketches of Spain? Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus John Coltrane - Giant Steps, My Favourite Things. Not sure if there were any others; I'd be very grateful if you could let me know if more spring to mind. |

Also Coltrane's A Love Supreme and Rollins' Tenor Madness (the title track being a fantastic duet with Coltrane). Enjoy. |

John Travis gave me some jazz CDs to try out, I'll have to add these ones as well. |

I'd add Miles Davis' "Birth of the Cool" and - well, almost anything by Miles, really. I even like "Bitches' Brew" which has been reviled by many afficionados. I'm currently learning to play "Four", i.e. the improvisation/soloing part which is mildly difficult. The theme took me a couple of days and I can now play it by heart. Coltrane's "Giant Steps" is downright horrible to play, because of the many tonal shifts requiring a different scale every couple of seconds. Apparently in pro circles the piece is used to gauge a musician's profinciency. |
