Anyone else seen this? A modern US tribute to Amicus films with a framework taken almost straight from VAULT OF HORROR. Four stories & a wraparound all with different directors. Seven minutes in and a character admits to loving the films of Mario Bava 'especially BLACK SABBATH & BLOOD & BLACK LACE' which meant the movie then had my undivided attention. Joe Dante does the framework, Ken Russell does a very misjudged piece about breast implants, Monte Hellman (remember him?) does a sedate piece about Stanley Kubrick & vampires, but the real standout for me was Sean Cunningham's erotic Japanese horror story that works so well I was genuinely surprised to see his name on it on the end credits. |

I will go look for this today... and oh yes, SALVAGE, which I've been having trouble finding... and something called MURDER PARTY, which someone else demands I see... but a tribute to the Amicus anthology horror movie?! Me like. |

Never heard of this one, Lord P - thanks for the tip! Anything that references Bava is enough to pique my interest... |

I saw an advert for the DVD in Rue Morgue magazine. The aspcet ratio is 1.78:1 so I've no idea if it was meant for some cable channel. Despite my slightly less than enthusiastic review I would hasten to add it is MILES better that MASTERS OF HORROR. |

I remember reading about the anthology John, but I've yet to see it... I have seen the other two films mentioned and of the two I preferred Murder Party, Salvage came across flat to me. Anyway its also known in the UK as Gruesome... http://www.find-dvd.co.uk/TLAUK060.htm |

Isn't this thread about the cricket and Australia's dominance? No? Oh well. |

I found MURDER PARTY lived up to all the conventions of bad indie horror - in sum: no plot, mindless blather, cheap effects, annoying characters, and a soundtrack that's like steel nails scraping a chalkboard in an echo-chamber. Anyone can make a film, is the lesson I came away with. And you know, maybe I will.... |

Watched TRAPPED ASHES last night, and although I agree it was a lot better than MASTERS OF HORROR, I didn't find much to recommend it really - the Japanese bit was pretty ok, and the tapeworm story almost showed promise, but it did smack of "made for tv" somehow. |

Sorry Mick - I'm setting my bar very low as far as US horror is concerned at the moment |

I only preferred Murder Party - I watched it with a mate and its the kind of movie we can laugh at, crack jokes about etc and I've definitely seen far worse US indies, at least MP had moments of humour where the dumb 'art' students thought it was all a performance... I've met people like them at university. Still not seen Trapped Ashes but from the sounds of it there's no rush... |

I've just watched Trapped Ashes and rather enjoyed it. I agree with Lord P about the silliness of the Ken Russell segment, and thought the part set in Japan had some good moments, but didn't work overall. My favourite was the John Saxon story about the director (based on Stanley Kubrick). Not great, but definitely worth a rent, at least, for those interested in this kind of thing. |

Me, I'm torn about renting it. |
