Well, the Beeb's really triumphed, hasn't it? Not content to let the real, one and only, Reggie Perrin rest in peace, they've commissioned an updated travesty with the wholly inappropriate Martin Clunes in the title role. The first episode (God help us, there will be more), complete with 60s canned laughter (though reports vary - this may have been actual laughter from an audience), aired Friday. And it was terrible. It saddens me that David Nobbs's name should even be attached to this. RIP Leonard Rossiter. If you're watching this debacle from a lofty celestial cloud, you deserve all the peace you can find there. Accept no substitues. There is only one Reginald Iolanthe Perrin - the original. What next? Martin Jarvis as Basil Fawlty? Wouldn't surprise me. Christopher |

Thank God: A TV critic who can critique what he saw: http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2009/apr/25/last-night-tv-reggie-perrin |

Yes, I was somewhat astonished to hear of this. Thankfully I didn't have to see it. |

I recorded the first episode then erased it without seeing it after reading your facebook comments, Christopher, and seeing a thirty second trailer. |

This happened a few years ago when Paul Merton remade Hancock's Half Hour. The review I remember best was this: "Last evening Paul Merton played Tony Hancock. He lost." |

What angered me most was the tagline for the trailer: "Time for a new Reggie". If they had been going out of their way to infuriate fans of the original - and the immortal Leonard Rossiter - they couldn't have done a better job. Grrrrrrrrr... I haven't been this mad since Steve Martin dared to call himself Sgt Bilko!!!! What is the world coming to? |

Those Paul Merton shows were bloody awful, yet he's recently done something similar on the radio with a sort of Galton & Simpson Playhouse thingy. Will the boy never learn? |

Christopher, you might appreciate the following quote from Simon Nicol of Fairport Convention, who were playing at the Robin 2 in Bilston a couple of years ago: "By the way, we are not a tribute band. We're the real thing." Linked to the topic of this thread, of course, by the current fever of remakes, covers and 'tributes' – in the sense that maggots are tributes to a cadaver. An updated version of Lovecraft's 'The Festival' would have a TV talent contest for worms. "And tonight, Matthew, I will be... Ephraim Waite!" |

I had a horribly vivid nightmare once in which Ant & Dec (shudder) remade the classic 'football score' episode of 'Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads?'. At least I think it was a nightmare... |

I just avoided it. There must be so many original scripts out there and I hate remakes. |

>>>This from the News of the World is pretty well spot on Perhaps the first time in history those two halves of a sentence have been accurately combined. |

I watched this last night, and it was terrible. Does anyone watch "The Inbetweeners"? It's hilarious. |
