This evening I finally saw the film version of this rather excellent novel, and thought it was astonishing. The two young leads are amazing (particulaly the actress who plays "Eli"), the sense of sadness and longing is heartbreaking, the ending is brilliantly done, and the whole thing is also very creepy and oddly beautiful. Loved it. |

I thought the film reflected our relationship beautifully, Simon. With me in the role of Eli, of course. |

Actually, I think we're more like Edward and Bella. |

[ *** SPOILER ALERT *** ] I now think of 'Let The Right One In' not as a love story but as a seduction story. Eli is pure evil and the boy is sucked into her survival plans in exactly the same way her former human attendant must have been when he was a similar age. Makes the story so much creepier don't you think... |

While I enjoyed this movie, I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped I would. Saw it at the cinema, late at night. Didn't help I'd read the book first, I suppose. |

My feelings exactly, Mark. I also read the book first. It's a good film, yes. The book, as is often the case, is better. **SPOILER ALERT** The book does a much better job of portraying Eli's ambiguous sexuality. |

*** SPOILER *** Haven't read the book but I took from the film that this was the girl's way of acquiring a new human servant to protect her body during the day. I believe her interest in the boy and protection of him was because she recognised a vulnerable soul she could mould to her purpose. No? |

IMHO, this is one of those rare occasions where the film is better than the book (I only decided this today, in hindsight) - the historical flashbacks in the novel are unnecessary, and spoil the ambiguity, and it's over-long. Also, there were a few scenes in the book where it almost lurched into sentimentality, but the film never came close. Small niggles, yes, but I thought the film did a good job of editing the story down to the essentials. *** SPOILER *** I do think they should have kept some of the peodophile overtones in he film, though; these were horrifying in the book. |
